So most of my guns have to play multiple roles. That is to say that for a very long time my Smith and Wesson M&P was my HD gun, my carry gun and my primary range gun. Now since then I have bought a little LCP for carry and have a few .22's for plinking at the range but the M&P still fills a lot of niches, still gets carried sometimes and always comes to the range with me.

Right now the only glaring omission in my arsenal is a 12gauge shotgun. I use to own a Remington 870 Express, I liked it enough but I always wished it had a synthetic stock and a fiber optic sight. Both very fixable issues but when a guy in work offered me 2x what I paid for the gun I took the deal. So now my new GunCasket shotgun safe is empty and I think it needs to be filled. Like most gun junkies, I always have to be budget aware with my gun purchases so a fancy semi-auto is out. I initially started looking at the classic pumps; such as Remington 870's and Mossburg 500's. All available with a synthetic stock and a I can always put on a fiber sight without much of an issue.

Well today I run across a screaming deal on a "Tri-Star Hunter" O/U shotgun. Its already got the synthetic stock and even has the 3.5in chamber if I ever felt the need for stupid powerful magnum loads. Looks like a great gun for the range and sporting clays course. Would work even better if I ever decided to hunt with it because its got a 28in barrel.

But I was hoping my shotgun could also fill an HD role, now a 28in barrel is going to be tough to maneuver around the house with but I think its possible with a little training, and I have become more and more of fan of the barricade and protect method anyway. But the 2 rounds in the gun kinda worries me. So wanted some input.

Do I get the O/U and just add some accessories like a side saddle or even a sling that holds more rounds and then just practice good reloads. Or do I save a little money and buy and 870 or Mossy 500. Obviously this gun is going to see more time on the range than in a firefight against a home intruder but if god forbid it ever is used in a HD scenario it needs to work.

Two shots should end any confrontation involving a single intruder if you can shoot halfway decent.

But the problem I see with any hammerless double barrel shotguns is, they are not safe to leave setting around loaded.

That is where the pump or semi-auto HD gun shines.

You can leave the mag loaded and chamber empty in "ready" storage, and they are perfectly safe when you jump out of bed and grab one up by the LOUD end.

It takes all of a split second to chamber a round in a repeater after you wake up and gain full muzzle control of the weapon.

A 20" barreled 870 and a 28" barreled O/U willl have about the same O/A length. So you can forget that "tough to maneuver" part.

Decent pumps are not that hard to find. Cheap O/Us, OTOH, are a crapshoot with few winners.

I leave my S&S loaded and half way open, across the dresser, it closes easily and i can do it very fast and quietly. I pick it up, and close it all in one motion... Of course, i've owned and hunted with my double for many years, so i'm VERY fimiliar with it.

no side saddle or sling with ammo on the gun, especially the sling, as it will add weight and start moving and act like a pendulum, all bad.

I'll disagree with Dave somewhat - a 18" pump will be more like a 24" O/U, not a 28" barreled gun, but that is minor anyway.

His other comment about cheap O/U and pumps is spot on. I am a double gun fan - O/U and SxS sit in my safe - if I was to use a shotgun as a primary HD gun, it would be a pump - cheap and easy enough to buy and practice with and a little more forgiving when adding geegaws on it

In the most recent SWAT magazine they had a nice little discussion in one of their articles about the pros and cons of O/U vs pump. Personally, I'd get what you want and then just work within the limitations of the weapon. So, do you want to own an O/U or a pump for your various shooting needs?

Thanks for all the input, not sure that I agree that the side saddle is a bad idea seems like pretty basic equipment on a shotgun I guess I can see the sling as a bad idea though. I more than likely will end up with a pump gun but we shall see the O/U has some nice appeal. I will check out that SWAT magazine article.
