Obama says 'enough is enough' after latest deadly shooting

I wonder why he never says the same when another prisoner of ISIS is beheaded or drowned in a cage or set on fire or locked in a car and blown up?

Very well said. While I don't agree with B.O.'s solutions, along with most of the other proposed liberal solutions, at least they are searching for a solution, while many conservatives proclaim that shootings like this are to be expected and accepted, if we want to preserve our 2nd Amendment rights, so no solution is needed. IOWs, shootings like this are a normal part of life, so get over it already. Sorry, I don't agree with that either.

My reply to this will echo a lot of what has already been said. The president and liberals in general are NOT searching for solutions. They are searching for control. Deep down, if they have the capability to be honest with themselves, they should be able to tell you that gun control will not stop mass murder. The NFA did not stop the Bath Schoolhouse massacre, the Assault Weapons Ban did not stop the Columbine High School massacre, the Sullivan Act has not stopped criminals from using handguns in NYC, the draconian gun laws in Chicago, New Jersey, Colorado, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and elsewhere have not stopped murder and spree killings.

Most of the last several spree shooters have passed background checks.
Most of the last several spree shooters have had no record or history of violence.
Most of the last several spree shooters have had a history of depression, mental illness or psychological disorder.

Universal background checks have not stopped spree shootings.
Magazine capacity bans have not stopped spree shootings.
Outright gun bans have not stopped spree shootings.
Gun control non compliance is at an all time high.

It's been said that the only action government can take to prevent these types of spree shootings is total and complete confiscation. Even that will not stop violent people from acting out in a violent manner. China has complete and total gun control, yet mass stabbings happen there with a frequency that rivals mass shootings in the United States. Australia has strict gun control laws, limits the type of guns civilians can have, and for what purposes they can be lawfully used. It's effect on crime has been virtually nil. Same as the UK after their complete and total handgun ban. Handguns used in crime actually rose after the ban, but has been fairly stable, statistically prior and after the ban went into effect.

What the president and his ilk have thus far refused to take into consideration when wanting to look tough, are the social and economic reasons people are violent. When the president says these sorts of things don't happen in other developed countries, he is mostly correct. But what he's not including is the demographic make up of those countries. He's not looking at the social or economic factors that limit or encourage violence.

France, for example, does not share a similar ethnic diversity as does the US. Most of Europe does not. And while they do have various ethnic groups within their borders, they tend to self segregate. In Paris, there are neighborhoods where a white person would not be welcome, no different than New York, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Detroit, Chicago, or any other major, even minor, American cities.

There's a meme floating around that compares Switzerland to Honduras. Both countries have a similar population, a similar land mass, but while Switzerland has one of the lowest gun related crime rates, Honduras has one of the highest. It further shows that in Switzerland, gun "ownership" and training due to mandatory military service is extremely high, Honduras has near total gun control, where only criminals have guns.

What the meme fails to show is economic factors. Switzerland has maintained a fairly stable economy, despite the economic turmoil throughout Europe. Honduras has a corrupt government, near bankrupt both economically and morally. In Switzerland, people have options and opportunities. In Honduras, people do not. They live in abject poverty, little to no access to food, clean water, medical services, education.

Now here in the United States, we have a diverse ethnic population. But segregation is making a comeback, voluntarily from the minority side, and the government has done little to slow the tide of segregation. For decades, integrated society was working. Now, thanks to the media, race relations in this country are at near Civil Rights Era. Not good. Racial and religious discrimination is on the rise. One side gets a free pass in the media, the other side gets hounded and vilified.

But despite 24/7 media coverage, crime is at record lows nationwide.

By and large, the "solutions" the left come up with aren't going to solve anything. Every time we see another of these shootings, anyone with half a brain can see the mental health aspect of it. But that is another slippery slope that, if and when abused, will eventually lead right back to the complete and total confiscation path the left starts us on every time.

Eliminate gun free zones. That would be a start. Bring gun safety education back into schools. Eliminate the societal taboo that guns are bad, guns are evil, guns are some fetish or magical talisman that creates or eliminates evil. Train teachers who are willing, get them to carry a gun, either open or concealed. Create a voluntary Emergency Response Team for schools and train them in crisis management. Develop real, meaningful responses and eliminate the mindset that we cannot combat guns with guns. Gun vs. Stapler, guns win. Guns vs. thrown books, guns win. Guns vs. locked doors and hiding under desks, guns win. Good guy with a gun vs. bad guy with a gun... Now you have a fighting chance. Trained response team with guns versus bad guy with guns, with the odds tipped heavily in the good guys favor, good guys are much more likely to win.

Enforce the several thousand gun laws already on the books. Stop sending minor drug offenders to prison. Establish better rehab protocols within prisons, and end the culture that continues to punish felons after their sentence is finished.

Our prisons are over populated and our schools are underfunded. I'd say if you want to do something meaningful about the violence in our culture, those are two perfect places to start. In order to change a culture of violence, we need to change the culture of our society.
