Maverick223 Had you heard of Herbs gun shop in near johnson city tenn. He put my rifle together. Good old man but now gone. Very happy with his build and was told I would pick up some fps with the Hornady 7mm rem mag HM ammo but till you read it you just don't know . These were factory loads and I did also call hornady and was told all was fine with my barrel and lenght. I don't reload any more and never for hunting And had no interest in pushing any limits. 300um guy just let me shoot across has crony, thats all. None of his ammo went in my rifle.
I never heard of a rifle blowing up down that way so maybe the 300 um guy backed his loads down or split a case or two and changed his loads. His rifle was a box stock remington. Shot there a couple more times before the range closed and never saw him again.

My main concern now is personal and family defense and who really knows what the price of firearms will be if the inmates are in charge of the asylum. I don't need to push the envelope, just carry what works well. I don't hunt elephants.

depends...

some rounds like .270 winchester are actually lighter loads than what that cartridge was when it came out...though production safety margins may have dictated that move from 3150-ish fps (130gr) down to more like 3060fps you see on most boxes of storebought. With modern powders you can very safely achieve the original and beyond...though to be honest my handloads for .270 are 60gr. of H4831SC with a sierra 130gr gameking SP...it runs right at 3000fps in a 22" barrel but it's accurate in all the rifles I've shot it in...it's the modern version of the classic load...and lets face it some of those "good ole days" numbers where likely ficticious to start with unless they powder wavered one heck of a lot more from lot to lot than it does these days (and maybe it did being mostly surplus millitary stuff back then...who knows). Now with the short cut H4831SC you could probably goose it up a little more (stacks in case better for more room)....but I've dropped piles of deer with it at 3000fps...so I see no point in a 100-150fps gain there.

Conversley you loads like the low presure .45acp can be goosed a little in modern pistols to make them more utillitarian as say...a woods walking companion as well as CCW (Doubletap 185gr load runs lnearly 1200fps in a G21!! near 600#'s of energy!) Their 230gr milks another 150fps out of the heavy gold dot load...making it even better if say....you ran into a bad tempered hog and didn't own a magnum revolver to carry.

So sometimes yeah....no point to hot-rodding things...but I ONLY carry 9mm that is +p rated with a 124gr gold dot....because that round becomes WAY more trustworthy with an excellent bullet with the largest nose opening that feeds well...and like the 185gr loads in .45....speed makes them expand and do what they do WAY more reliably. (though I generally like 230gr loads in .45 and rarely hot ones in a 1911...I don't mind battering the 21SF!)

I sure haven't, I do most of my business here in the flat part of the state (Eagle Guns to be precise), but if they are a good spot to browse around I will drop by there next time I venture West if they are still in business. Glad to hear that you didn't shoot any of Mr. Ultra Mags rounds...those are a little over the top IMO...the ones your buddy worked up for you weren't nearly as bad.

:)

I can remember back in the mid-60's, my Pop was reloading 243's for his and my brother's rifles. Pop would reload about 2-3 boxes, we'd go to the range and he'd shoot and shoot. After about 3 times of reloading the same powder/bullet recipe, he'd boost 'em a little, using IMR 3031 and Hornady 100 grainers. Then, the lever on my brother's Sav. 99 began to get harder than Hell to open, when we did get it open, sometimes taking two of us to get the job done, the primers were gone, necks starting to get a split at the mouth... absolutely no fun to shoot! That lil' .243 had such an muzzle blast, about like an 5" 38 aboard ship. Finally Pop quit hot rodding this round, thinking this lever action just wasn't going to get the job done, so he traded it for another Sav. .243, an Model 110-P bolt. We went to the sptg gds place to get more bullets 2 weeks later, the guy behind the counter ask Pop how hot he'd been shooting this rifle. Pop told him the grains used, weight of bullet, then asked the guy why he was asking. The guy told him, "Our gunsmith was looking at this rifle, cleaning it up for re-sale and noticed the lever was a tad bit hard to close, so he checked it out a little further, then found out the GD breech was sprung!" :what: The guy further told Pop the G/S had to scrap the rifle for parts, too far out of specs for re-sale!! The amounts of powder and bullet weights weren't above MAX, but some rifles, lever vs bolt, won't hold up to the abuse given them every boxful after boxful like he was giving them.

This is why I don't hot rod in the powder dept., raising the load in .1 increments to maybe see how that bullet weight acts is fine, but when shooting an .243 that roars like an .300RUM, and kicks like an .458 Lott, ...... mmmmm might take a little longer look at what you're doing, or not doing right. Brass will not last very long, and the rifle won't work very good either, with all of those loose fired primers rattling around inside the action. :cuss:

Glad to see somebody had this thread on here!

maverick223 Herb is died. My loads were factory loads. NO RELOADS in my rifle. Never mind.
I'm sorry, I misunderstood you...now that I re-read it I think I follow you. BTW, that is pretty good velocity out of a 7mmRM!
