I was filling in my C&R and found this a little odd. Quoted straight off the application.

Are you in possession of a valid hunting license or permit lawfully issued in the United States?

It then goes on to state

If you answered "NO", you likely cannot lawfully possess a firearm and therefore cannot be a federal firearms licensee

***? Basically they're are saying that if you do not have a hunting license, you are a convicted felon. I think you do not need a license to hunt on your own property in VA. Also, what does hunting have to do with collecting curios and relics?

I know we're dealing with the ATF here, but how stupid are they?

I noticed that as well and checked no because I haven't had a hunting license in years. It did seem kinda weird at the time, still does actually, but I hope this doesn't have any impact on me getting the license. After all, it's already been 5 weeks since they cashed my check...maybe that's a good sign?

Does anyone have the contact number for ATF that is on the back of the C&R application? Like a dumb-arse...I didn't make copies of the forms before sending them in. :banghead:

I think that form was generated back when Zumbo used to volunteer to help them with their intake of applications. This was his way of assuring at all applicants possessed at least one none-AR firearm.

Did I just say that? This is obviously a joke. :p

Don't bother. They don't put that form on the website. You have to request it be mailed to you (they are fast about it).
Yea, I just found that out. Hmm. They used to have all the forms in PDF.

Man, I don't remember that question when I renewed mine a year and a half ago. That must be something new.

Just found a copy of the application from 2003 (5310-16). It definitely didn't have that question on it.

Don't Fill Out Question 10!!!

You are filling in the wrong part of the form!! Unless you happen to be a Non-Immigrant (no Green Card) Alien in the USA?

Question 10 is, as its title suggests, ONLY to be filled out for Non-Immigrant Aliens, e.g. a Canadian who is living here, without a Green Card, and wants a C&R. They need a Hunting License for a C&R, just like they do to purchase a gun in the USA.

American Citizens (I'm making an assumption about you here...) should NOT fill in Question 10 at all. It is entirely IRRELEVANT to you as a Citizen.

Futuristic

Geese

I hate paperwork.

Still a little odd though. I don't see the connection between not having a hunting license and being a convicted felon, wife beater, etc.

With mine, all I did was put N/A on Question 10 so that they know that you didn't miss a part by mistake.

atb, The connection is simple once you understand beaurocratesespeak.

People who own guns for hunting are good (until the all great beaurotcratesespeak evolves, just like the constitution does whenever the great high minded masters decide it needs to).

People who own EBRs are bad, and must have their children, dogs, and wives shot, or their home and all the community children burned; after being accused in the national media as being a pedophile.

Glad to help you.

(I hated the paperwork for my C&R too, and still do, and I sent mine in months ago.)

I wish BATFE would let me rewrite the form for them. It is confusing on that part of it, and it could be fixed easily to make it clear.

I believe in writing forms so that an average 3rd grader can complete them without having to call for assistance.

What makes you think these forms aren't being written by civil servants with the equivalent of a 3rd graders mentality. Many forms are written in government double speak. Provides a plausible means of denial. " You failed to fill the form out correctly". "But no one I know can understand what the form says!" "That's not important, you have to fill it out correctly".
"Aarrggghh!"

I did my C&R early this year . Made copies of the form and practiced filling it out . Went over to a buddies house (gunsmith,01 FFL) and had him look over what I filled in . The one thing he did say was , NO abbreviations. Copied over what I had filled in onto the actual form , sent it out , and 20 days after they charged my card I got it and the materials in the mail . These guys are anal , so attention to detail is warrented.

Ah, yes. I see it now. It's not on the Application. It's on the Certificate of Compliance (5330-20).
You must have an old form. The newest version of the application (May 2005) incorporates the Cert. of Compliance into the application. It's no longer a separate form.
