If it was for federal security clearance it would more likely than not be the Secret Service not the state police. I have done several of these over the years for former employees.
Nah, I've worked in that world.

Office of Personnel Management, Defense Investigative Service, sometimes FBI. Occasionally, they draft BATFE and other types for Federal clearance work if they're really shorthanded.

Your right I believe it was the Defense Security Service or something like that not the Secret Service either way not the State Police. Thanks for the correction.

how the hell is defending your home "not your job"!?!?
First rule of gun fighting: don't be there. When you know a home invasion is coming, call in the troops and sit back.

wonder how this is all going to turn out. Either jester is 1) shooting it out with the bandit or 2) having a cup of joe with a local cop about a client who happened to be involved in something bad before he skipped bail.

I'm bookmarking this thread, the virtual equivalent of "don't touch that dial"

Wow !!!
This has to be one of the most replied-to threads that I've seen at THR.

My 2 cents : Same as so many others.

Most important - DON'T let him in your house.
Then (in random order) - Be in your car parked where he won't notice you as he drives up but in a good position to see your door.
- I like the note-with-cell-phone-number on the door idea.
- call the police (who should be in the area) and let them know that your caller is here.
- Judge the situation as it unfolds.

Good Luck and we're all on pins & needles waiting to see what happens.

Update

Alright they came and went this is what happened.

Unmarked silver Mercedes looking car pulls up on the side of my house. Two men get out one is clearly wearing a badge and pistol and has a tucked in shirt. The other is business casual looking.

They knock on the door, I check out the surrounding area and wait a minute. I then ask for IDs. One is FBI the other is state police. FBI agent was the one in the casual dress. I walk them to my patio in the backyard.

They explain that they are investigating a tip they received about some purchases that I had made online in the last several months. Just a side note I have purchased a good deal of tactical gear and body armor recently (bail enforcement). I explained that I was an active BEA and gave them my credentials.

They said it was a routine check and they got a call so they had to check it out. They asked about my military service and whether I was involved in any militias or groups planning to overthrow the government. I explained that I was a veteran and was dedicated to my country. They asked if I had ever encountered groups like that in CT. I said no.

They then asked if I used online nicknames I replied yes I have several. They asked if I could tell them the ones. I said I would rather not but one began with a J and I went through the first letter of all of them.

They were interested in one that began with a letter K. Since I dont use it here it was a good sign. They asked if I was a member of any chat groups online I told them several. When they asked what I told them computer related sites and some gun sites. They asked me about the gun sites, I told them I like to read up on sport shooting and target shooting. I would not give the name of any particular sites though.

They asked if I had a website, again I told them yes, I have a website from when I ran a .com startup programming company a few years back. The trooper asked the agent if he had anything else. The agent pretty much said nothing the entire time. When they were both satisfied I walked them to their car.

Ohh I mentioned that the state police were unable to verify it was a legit house visit. He said it was not unlikely that they couldnt verify it and even if they could they most likely would not tell me. Ohh and my town cops did not show up like we had arranged.

I will post some more reflections on the entire 24 hour event later on today and see what I did right and wrong and give some advice for anyone in the future who is faced with something like this.

Thank you all for your advice and support it helped me not pull my hair out.

Edit: He appeared to carry a Berreta 92 incase you were wondering =)

tagging for follow up.

I think the paranoia is running at a pretty high level. He is probably investigating someone else.

So, a fishing expedition simply because you bought some tacticool gear? That's pretty messed up.

It's very intresting that they were so concerned with any online screen names... As always we should be aware that these are public forums... and as such you never know who's reading.

pretty scary when a BEA can't buy equipment to do his job without the GOV getting their panties in a twist

I would have asked who made the call... was it the company you were buying it from? Because who else would know?

I got a call from a VA trooper for an interview once, but he told me why. Investigating a city cop for insurance fraud after his wife hit us in the rear.

Wow...CT po-po drive really nice vehicles...

I'd say you did good, other than not having an attorney present. Looks like, with all the posts in this thread, someone would have recommended you do that...

Are you in the militia?

Why yes sir I am if you refer to United States Code Title 10 Section 13

a) The militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied
males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section
313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a
declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States
and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the
National Guard.
(b) The classes of the militia are -
(1) the organized militia, which consists of the National Guard
and the Naval Militia; and
(2) the unorganized militia, which consists of the members of
the militia who are not members of the National Guard or the
Naval Militia.

If Jester's update re the questions they asked is true, that's pretty disconcerting. I don't like the idea of the feds checking up on people for buying vests and other tactikewl junk. It stinks. It most certainly violates the spirit of the founding fathers' intentions for this country. It reeks of a gestapo in its infancy.

Should told them to get the f out of here and come back with a warrant, at which time an attorney would be able to answer any questions. The more people voluntarily answer these seemingly innocent questions, the bolder the G men get.

I still wonder if this whole post started as a hypothetical.

Ever the skeptic,

One is FBI the other is state police.

Is it just me, or does it seem REALLY odd that an FBI agent and a State Trooper would be riding together in the same car to go make a call? I've never heard of such a thing. Something seems really wrong about this whole setup...

This story is BS.

Sorry.

FBI? Asking for your screen names? Gimme a break. They can lift that in about 2 seconds. They'd know if you were involved in anything illegal and would have no reason to talk to you or ask you about screen names.

Folks, this thread is a hoax. Just follow the story. Ignore all posts except for the actual events. Does this sound like law enforcement? Sure, LE does some strange things...but they way it plays out is just too convenient.

On a task force this would not be so strange for them to riding around together. It is odd that they would be asking about some tactical junk you bought on line.

I guess this answers the question if the federales are reading the boards.

They already knew my screen names I just wanted to see which ones they knew so I gave them the first letter of a bunch I had, when I got to "K" they asked if it was K***** and I said yes it was. This whole thing tracks back to some purchases I had made in the last few months they said. Some of those purchases were made off eBay with a screen name. That screen name however did not start with a "K" and was not the one they are thinking of. However I do use the "K" name at midwayusa and galls.com login.

They said they had an anonymous tip line for people who are concerned about unusual activity and someone reported my screen name to it. From there they traced it back to me. At first I thought it may of been eBay but I do not use the "K" name on it. As I was walking them back to their car I asked if they get a lot of calls on these kinds of things and they said they were kept "busy".

Edit: Now to be fair they never said exactly what the items in questions where in the last few months I have bought

•*Magazines for many different firearms
• MREs
•*Body armor
•*Rifle protection plates for body armor
•*Ammo
•*Firearms
•*Assorted ranges bags and tactical bags
•*Pepper Spray
• 10 pairs of handcuffs
•*A scope
•*a lasermax for my glock
•*bunch of hostlers

Ohh and they did mention that I purchased a 9/11 newspaper off ebay now that I think about it. You can see my winning auction here http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...MEWN:IT&viewitem=&item=260121351009&rd=1&rd=1
My dad collects old newspapers from major events he has titanic, JFK assassination, man walks on moon, ect. I got him this one for his birthday since he was missing it.

You can also see some of my ebay purchase history if you are curious through that link.

I would have told them that I bought the e-bay stuff for my "friend".

"What friend, you ask? The sniper wannabe whack job in the woods over there... Waiting for me to take my hands out of my pockets." :neener:
