Odd Phone Call Today

Definitely meet on neutral territory; makes good sense too me~! ;)

I don't allow unwanted guests (including police officers) inside my residence
for any reason. Sure, if I call 'em; then they are welcomed, but BEWARE,
there are some persons that use the badge and uniform as a way to invade
a person's privacy~! Sounds too me, like this cat is a wanna be; trying to
find out what is inside your residence, and possibly set you up for a real
big time burgluary~! :scrutiny::eek::(

Careful with the golf ball idea. The balls may damage your sink, your floor, or things around your sink. You may want to use something softer, like ping-pong balls.

I am unable to contact him to meet somewhere else as I cannot find out who he is. I will take into consideration leaving a note that I had to leave and post it on my door. I will also contact the local PD and see if I can have a squad car there when he arrives. Other then that I think I have covered by butt, I told the state trooper if I am drawn upon for any reason I will defend myself since they have been unable to identify himself.

Any police on the boards that can chime in with advice, suggestions.

You did WHAT ?!? Well, that classifies you as a dangerous and paranoid crazy person in their books. If you need to defend yourself, then you do it. You do NOT go telling the police that you are PREPARING to defend yourself .. possibly against THEM. :what:

"I told the state trooper if I am drawn upon for any reason I will defend myself since they have been unable to identify himself."

Really Bad Move.

Never make threats. Never. Period, exclamation point.

Best to have an attorney present. If nothing else, he's a witness who might make a Bad Guy would-be robber think again.

And you can meet on the front steps; you don't have to unlock the door you locked behind you--absent a warrant. :)

You can always sit in your car, on the street, and just watch as this "cop" shows up. Then decide.

It's quite possible it's a legit deal. No way to tell, here on the Errornet.

The state trooper didnt seem put off by this statement at all and told me to notify the state police when the person arrived if they arrived to verify his identity.

There is no reason to draw on me, I am a veteran, I follow laws very closely, I am a bail enforcement agent that works closely with state police. Most of these guys know me. If a lone gunman who cannot be identified comes to my house in an unmarked car and draws a weapon at me I will defend myself.

Now if a marked car comes and 2 uniformed officers come I will assume they are legit. Under the circumstances I am on high alert.

I have given the police at state and local level almost 24 hours to verify the phone call, should I contact the ATF/FBI/INS or any other departments that may be working as a task force in my state?

I asked several times what it is concerning and he said he would tell me face to face and he did not want to talk about it on the phone

That doesn't make any sense, unless it's a trick to either arrest you or something vastly worse. Second the notion that you must call him back at his office and confirm his identity. Also meet on neutral territory with your attorney only after you know what this is regarding.

I have been served a summons (witness) and it takes about 1 second, the deputy pulled up in a marked cruiser, knocked on door, handed me paper and left.

Moreover, the process server could very easily just serve you at work. It sounds like a lot of hassel for a mere process server to go through.

I agree strongly with everyone else that says lawyer up NOW. If you do decide to meet him at your house have your lawyer or at least a good witness with you. (there should be no reason for him to talk to you alone.) and tape/video record the conversation if you can. Post a sign if you have to.

If he does come to you house be waiting for him with your lawyer/friend on the front porch with the doors locked. Give your house keys to your friend until Mr. Federal Officer leaves. Set out few lawn chairs and some lemon-aid if your feeling hospitable. But do not let him into your home for any reason. & it's already been said, but don't lie about anything. Silence is the only way to go.

I truely hope it's nothing, but rembember - at the very best he is not out to get you. He is certainly not coming there to do you any favors. Be polite, but don't feel you need to do him any.

Do NOT be home when this person shows up. Be somewhere close where you can observe and call 911. Leave a note on the door for him: "Had an emergency - call me at (your cell phone number)". His reaction will answer all your questions.

From what you have said here, I think this guy is either BATF trying to find a way confiscate your guns and your freedon or some other type of criminal trying to take your guns and maybe your life.

Were I in your shoes, I would contact the local police. This person may be someone of 'interest' to them

Anything you say.....

...can and will be used against you in a court of law.

OK, Jester, I agree with Hexidecimal and Art E, you shouldn't have threatened them. Having read all through this thread, something here seems definitely queer (in the old-fashioned sense.)

But now you DO need Perry Mason from the git-go, especially a Perry Mason who is personally sympathetic to your 2A rights. You shouldn't have made a threat. Or statement. Call it what you will. Telling your opponent your game plan in advance is almost always a Bad Idea.

If the whole thing is legit, the conversation will take the aforementioned 20 min and that'll be that, but your lawyer will have been in on the ground floor and should something come up later he'll have a record and be able to recall the situation.

If it's a LEO sting or something like that, Mr. Mason will be able to head it off, and advise you as to how to proceed.

If it's a burglary thing or something like that, Mr. Mason will be able to see that, too, and probably confound the would-be burglar with $4 words, and, again, advise you as to how to proceed.

It's gonna cost you. Perry Mason doesn't come cheap. But he does earn his fee.

Good luck. Please keep us posted.

Tag for outcome…

This is definitely very odd. I agree with some of the other posters. Move your car out of your garage and/or driveway, park it somewhere unnoticeable. DO NOT be home when this guy shows up. And I don’t mean wait inside and pretend not to be home, I mean DO NOT be home!

If it’s legit, which I doubt, then they will understand you having an “emergency”, as you weren’t “required” to be there. Reschedule, and meet somewhere neutral, and in public. If it ISN’T legit, and this is someone scoping you out and they decide to break in, you do NOT want to be home. You wouldn’t want to go to jail if you had to defend yourself, when you knew it might be coming. Sounds like something a good enough lawyer can manipulate - you were waiting for them :scrutiny:. And even if then, why risk your hide if you know it might potentially come to that by being home. Be nearby and in contact with the police if this is the outcome.

Yea if you dont hear from me assume the worst, I will MOST certainly be posting updates if I get any through the night as well as the outcome. Im sure you will hear from me even if it is the worst though.

Worst case in my mind is

1) Its someone trying to rob me, which I will be as ready as one can be for
2) Its a police officer and they are arresting me, in which case I will post bail and post what I did wrong.

Atleast its not zombies, seeing as they cant use phones.

Edit: Local PD has agreed to be in the area during the expect time and they are as on my side as they can be. I will let them handle the event.

They may serve a no knock tonight now that they know you are armed and dangerous. :what:

Get a lawyer and I would make sure more than one other person is there. Also under no circumstances let him in the house.

I got served once because of a car accident I was in turned out to be nothing the insurance company couldn't handle. They did not call in advance they just showed up called the house from the driveway said it was the sheriff's office they needed to speak with me but they didn't want to come to the house because they saw a dog leash (my beagle would have licked them to death). I thought they were joking then I looked out and saw the unmarked car in the driveway. It was daylight and there were people around so I didn't feel the need to grab the gun. It took two minutes and like the person said above they don't even care if you read it or understand it here it is sign and leave.

This does not have the feel of a being served.

I thought about that too...

One thing that notice hasn't been mentioned yet here, and sort of a big one I'd think, is that just maybe it has nothing to do with the gun angle at all. You mentioned that the only place that profession is listed is on firearm related paperwork, and that sort of swayed everyone in a certain direction here. Also though, wouldn't someone you rubbed the wrong way in the routine of bail enforcement also know that's what you did ? Seems quite likely to me that there would always be people, sometimes the wrong kind of people, unhappy with bail enforcers.

I'm not saying I think that's the case, but it seems like an obvious avenue that hasn't been discussed.

The state police mentioned the fact it could be a pissed off bail skip. It is possible and I will rule nothing out. However if this is the case I should be able to spot him from a distance.

If it is the police isnt it reasonable to think that their will be atleast 2 of them to do anything on private property?

Very interesting. I can see how you got caught short -- I usually take a couple of seconds to process things through my neck hair alarm system. I shall add this to my "experience fund," even though it's second-hand.

Trouble is, now he she it they know what day you have off.

I've got a sign on my door which says "Day Sleeper. Please Do Not Disturb," which works for all kinds of solicitors.... and no, I don't work nights.

It's fun to watch them thrugh the window, going around the apartment complex knocking on doors, hearing them come up the stairs, approach my door, and then go to the next apartment without even the most timid little tap-tap on my door.

Could be just a trooper doing a background check on a State Police Candidate. I got interviewed by a trooper when a bud of mine wanted to join the State Police about twenty years ago.

Or maybe someone you know is looking for a federal job... Homeland Security has been really diligent on background checks for employment recently.

It's good to stay sharp, but it's probably OK.

Best of luck on that one, Jester!

If it's the police it's reasonable to think they won't need to call ahead to schedule a meeting at your house. They'll bring you/invite you in or more likely just show up in a pair. Feds are hilariously easy to spot most of the time. Their shoes are too neat and their casual pants have a fresh crease. Unless they're under cover any effort on their part to dress down just looks comical. I remember when a pair of them plus an ATF guy were at my complex to pick up a dealer. As I approached I saw them about fifty yards out standing by the office and thought "boy, those guys look just like feds." Sure enough..

1) real cops, trying to make a case on a bail skip.

2) bail skip sez you did bad things, real cops want your side.

3) bail skip pissed at you, wants payback.

4) lowlife got list, assumes you have all the cool weapons he's seen on TV (you _do_ have a bad mullet, right?), along with all the money, and he's gonna rip you off.

5) none of the above.

First off, start digging a deep hole in your front yard. When the hole is about 12 or so feet deep place a few large rocks in the bottom, rocks about the size of a fist, make sure to cover the bottom good with them. After that is complete, cover the top of the hole with small diameter sticks, small enough to break when stepped on. Now, the final part, use grass to camoflage the sticks so it looks like an ordinary yard. Now when the so called "LEO" approaches stand on the opposite side of the hole and extend your hand toward him as if you want to shake hands. When he comes toward you he will fall in the hole and break his ankles on the rocks. Retreive him when he finally passes out from exaustion and keep him in your basement in a very deep hole while periodically making him rub lotion on his skin and threatening him with "the hose" if he doesn't comply.

All jokes aside, I would call and cancel the meeting like most of these guys said and meet somewhere public.

My god there's alot of scare tactics being used.

"they're casing you"
"BATFE trying to take away your freedom"
"you gonna get burglarized"
"fake cops trying to murder you"
"aliens trying to do inappropriate things to your body"

You guys should take your TV's out to the range and shoot them to bits.

Also, if the guy who called is legit then it was a REALLY bad idea telling the state trooper that you'll defend yourself. You obviously have the right to do so but it seems to give them a bad impression. To add my own scare tactic, I think you might hear SEARCH WARRANT!!!! sometime soon, you know, for their safety.;)

What you said has been said.
I understand you can't call him back.
You are recorded I'm sure with your promise to defend yourself.

How about being right around the corner, and having your lawyer answer the door, and give you a cell call if it turns out legit?

Otherwise 100% on not being there, and leave him a number to call.

Maybe just park down the street within view of your home.

I, like everyone else, don't like the smell..........

Jester whatever you do..dont have the meeting in your own home and please not without legal representation!!! believe me ..you may regret it more than you can imagine if you do not protect yourself. This is one time an attorney is not your enemy.. LE officers when invited into your home can use anything against you..been there dont it!!!!
