I'm leaving on a driving trip to Las Vegas today.

The first thing I'm going to do when I get there is take the family to the Gun Store and rent some machine guns. :D

I'll post a range report when I get back.

I spent the weekend in Atlantic City and didn't think to look for rental machineguns. The place looks like a war zone so there must be machineguns, right?

Oh well, Caesars was very, very good to us. We got two free suites plus all the meals and taxes comped and they let us win a bunch o' bucks.

Next time I'll look for the machineguns. Meanwhile, I'm thinking Rohrbaugh and Ed Brown. No, Cooper. No, Beretta 28 ga. No, dang, I'm so confused. ;)

Desert Sportsmen Outdoor Range

While in Las Vegas, you might want to hook up with the local IDPA and USPSA Chapters. Most weekends @ Desert Sportsmen outdoor range (on the way to Red Rock Canyon), there is some kind of match going on.

You see I have never thought to go there on vacation because I don't gamble. But to shoot class IIIs sign me up!

Just got back.

The gunstore was really hopping. Even with 20 customers they were friendly and efficient.

We shot the MP5, MP40 and M1 Thompson. 5 mags each

The staff was very knowledgeable but didn't talk down to the customers.

We had really great time. I even saw a 9 year old shooting an M16.

Well I used to think there was nothing I wanted to see or do in Vegas but I think you just convinced me otherwise. How much did all this fun add up to? If you don't mind my asking.

If you tell them you saw their ad in the airport, each gun with 5 mags is about $57 plus tax.

There really is something to see and do in Las Vegas for everyone. Shooting is just one thing.
Of course, if you would have called me, I could have let you shoot my Sten for the cost of the ammo at Wal-Mart.

Wow, that's a screaming deal. Well I never thought I'd say this but I now want to go to Vegas. BTW are there any training facilities in or near Vegas? You know, like Thunder Ranch or Gunsite type academies? You guys are so lucky, I drive about 220 miles clockwise or counterclockwise and I'm back in the same place. :)

Front Sight is a training school and a private club, it is not an open range. it is located in Pahrump, NV, about 60 miles north of Las Vegas and in a different county (Nye County).

alot of people don't like the Gun Store on Tropicana and prefer American Shooters on Arville St. The Gun Store employees that i have spoken to talked down to people about Class III items and were grossly misinformed about it too. one of them told me his brother owned a transferable Glock 18. another guy told me his friend has a transferable M249 SAW. apparently they had yet to meet Dan Shea over in Henderson to set them straight (he is the editor of Small Arms Review and recognized as the authority in C3 weapons). since these weapons are manufactured overseas they would have to have been imported prior to 1968, before either weapon was designed. but according to an employee at the Gun Store, FN had a plant in the United States in the 1980's and made a domestically produced M249SAW which was for civilian sale (not for military use, since military guns aren't in the NFA registry). what a load of B.S. to say the least. let's not forget FN built a plant recently here in the U.S. after winning the U.S. Government contract to build M16's. so why would they have built a plant in the US in the 80's to manufacture machine guns for civilians, spend the money tooling up, then shutting it down, only to reopen one in the 2000's? and nobody has heard of this FN plant either except this one guy, and the owner of the SAW too.

i've also seen how they don't let the customer handle the gun that much. if you rent it, they take the gun and the mags and escort you into their range. they load the weapon for you and hand it to you. you fire it, and when it is empty they take it from you and escort you out of the range. a little too business-like for me.

American Shooters just hands you the gun and lets you go in the range yourself but about 40% of their C3 weapons were broken or out of order.

also be advised of the legalities of this. they can't charge you to rent the gun, they can only charge you for the ammunition and possibly a "consultation" fee. it is illegal to rent post-sample machine guns. of course the Gun Store staff will tell you different. but you could always call the ATF and ask them.

Thanks for the info guys, firing a full auto weapon is pretty high up on the list of stuff I want to do before I croak and if could combine it with a buffet and some tactical mindset and technique training that would be great. Damn, if I was a younger man I could join Uncle Sam's Misguided Children and get to do it as part of my job description.

Frontsight is actually located appox. 20 miles away from Pahrump, in between Las Vegas and Pahrump. I am pretty sure it is in Clark County. The county line is pretty much right when you come to the first structures in Pahrump on Hwy 160. I recently moved from Pahrump back to Las Vegas and have taken four or five classes at Frontsight as well as being a Frontsight First Family member.

I have only been inside The Gun Store a couple times and that was for a specific reason: I didn't really look around. I do know one of the guys that works there: Tony Dee. He teaches their CCW classes and is a retired police officer. He runs the machine gun matches at Desert Sportsman's and has had some recent articles published in The Small Arms Review. I know for a fact that the store owns an M249, although I realize it is not transferable.
I work as a firefighter in Las Vegas and The Gun Store is in my first due area.

If you want to attend a class at Frontsight, contact me and I can hook you up with a certificate to take a four day class or two two day classes, or one two day class for two people for a fraction of the cost listed on their website.

i took a CCW class there and i liked the instructor. what i didn't like was two of the salespersons' attitudes. in essence they acted like they personally owned the post-samples for rent. their collection isn't bad, but it isn't anything to write home about either. the most impressive piece is the M249SAW. before i left Las Vegas, i was one of four people in the area with that weapon: The Gun Store, Dan Shea, and Larry Reimer (Pahrump / Area 51 - The Arms Room). Larry has since sold his i believe to pay for his legal defense against ATF.

i am now back in Texas and took it back with me. the best thing about The Gun Store's SAW was that it was available for rent. mine was not and neither was Dan's to be best of my knowledge. Larry may or may not have, i have no idea.

my original post stated that one of the salesmen said his friend had a transferable SAW. that is either a blatant lie or a person not very well versed in C3 firearms. my opinion is it is always best not to blurt such information out if you don't really know what you're talking about, especially when you're on the selling side of the gun counter.

Thanks for the kind offer 444. You know all this TSA intrusiveness has pretty much put me off of traveling off this rock but airfares from Hawaii are pretty cheap and this would be worth it. I'm not really a gambler and I don't drink so Vegas has never had much appeal for me but this could change things around. I guess firearms are my vice. I guess I'll do some googling on Frontsight.

Well the Frontsight certificates are not really a kind offer: I would be selling you something that I previously paid for.
BUT, I would be happy to assist you in your trip any way I can and would almost certainly be available to take you out for a little full auto action.

American Shooter's also has snooty employees, costs more than the Gun Store and doesn't allow carry even for off-duty police. I hate that place. Tony Dee at the Gun Store runs all the local mg matches at Desert Sportsman's and also ran the match for our UziTalk.com match last Saturday. The guy works his butt off, and for nothing except the love of shooting. He had an Uzi at the match Saturday that is a rental at the Gun Store and has over 3 million rounds through it. Runs great!
