An Ogden father was arrested early Wednesday after he allegedly shot his daughter's estranged boyfriend in the chest.
Ogden police Lt. Scott Sangberg said the 20-year-old boyfriend was lucky: The handgun used was a small, .22-caliber, and the bullet struck a rib, resulting in only a minor wound that doctors at McKay-Dee Hospital were able to treat before releasing the man.

Good shot placement in this case wasn't enough. Sometimes caliber does matter. Yeah, yeah, I know, .22's can be deadly..........

So a gang banger kicks the girl out, comes after her father when he shows up to help her get her kid safely out of there, Dad pokes him in the chest with a .22, the gang banger continues to threaten the father in front of many witnesses at the hospital, and Dad goes to jail?

I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often. But maybe fathers don't rescue daughters much anymore....

So, guy kicks girl out, gets into argument, and gets shot.

At what point is there justification for shooting this fellow?

I hope the asshat father gets the book thrown at him and a hefty civil suit.

If he [the boyfriend] really is a gang member, it is too bad it was only a 22. A 357 magnum would have given this story a happier ending. :p

That is true Aran; I am generalizing (a bad thing, perhaps, but still accurate) based on the gangs around here in Michigan. Most of them are no-name little toerags out to shaft a hard working person out of their hard earned belongings, without a second thought towards tactics, planning, or the future.

Sounds like the father has been making excellent decisions all of his life...

* Boyfriend is 20, figure the girl is close to that age too.
* 20 year old (or so) girl, not married, living with a thug, has two year old. Perhaps two year old is from another thug since the article didn't mention the thug was the baby's daddy.
* Dad is 39... meaning he had his kid when he was 20 (or so)... daughter has her kid when she was 18 (or so)... The circle continues.
* Dad appears to have pulled the weapon and pops the boyfriend at some point... why? Because the boyfriend said something the dad didn't like? Great judgment.
* Dad brings a .22 to a gunfight and learns that he now has to worry about some thug he shot with a piece of crap coming after him later.

All in all, it's reading stories like this that make me realize that no matter how screwed up my life is, it could be worse.

Maybe he was in a gang that smuggled Beagles?
That story sounds like it has reached a good ending. Ex-boyfriend goes to hospital and dad spends a night in jail to cool off. The dad should get a nice breakfast of eggs, hashbrowns, bacon, and toast; for being such a stand-up guy. Prosecuting attorney doesn't prosecute anyone and they stay out of each others way and live happily ever after. The end.

A rib stopped the .22......?......what.....? What was it, a CB...ya, just a warning shot....are we sure it wasn't a pistol pellet gun.

I don't understand this. It did stop the guy. Immediately. He was lucky to have lived, but the point of a self defense shooting is not to kill, but to stop the threat. Sounds like it worked.

thanks dan, good summary

If this father really did shoot some just because he was saying things he didn't like, i hope he goes to jail for a long time. In this case seems like attempted murder might be a more appropriate charge. If i shot someone in the chest with a .22, i can guarantee my intent was to kill them. (or disable the person with no regard for their life if you prefer)

Sure, ignore the fact that a guy got involved in someone else's argument and shot someone over words.

This guy is NOT someone to idolize as a good fellow in the "gun world"
