Thanks for the history lesson. That fills in a lot of the background.

Were not the add on stocks intended to mount to some special points on the frames? So to do this accurately the frames need to be modified for this?

Certainly it would be simple enough to make up a shoulder stock that just replaces the hand grips but unless special arrangements are made in the mounting of the stock that will leave the mount without sufficient support given the leverage available in a shoulder stock.

Just don't reach out to support it like a rifle unless you're wearing one of those leather wrist guards.... :D

Bitter Sweet...

Just on a hunch... I swung by the house a little bit ago... and there it was on the porch !!! My 1858 NMA Bison has arrived !!!   She's a purdy thang too !! Surprisingly light too. The brass frame kind of makes up for the 12" barrel in that department. Finally !!! A BP revolver that doesn't have that annoying ring around the cylinder !!

Now the "bitter" part. Dagnabit! The back strap (brass) doesn't marry up to the left grip, just rearward of the base of the hammer. It appears that the grip is "flat", but the brass appears to be the culprit. The right side of the brass (grip) is on an even plane with the hammer cut out. The left side of the grip frame (brass) has a 5/8" section with a little too much material removed (probably a file or narrow belt sander), by a full 1/32" (on the forward part and fades back to the correct, even plane) so that it's not on the same plane in that area and has an air gap between the brass and the walnut grip. Hold it up and you see a wedged shaped line of daylight... it's the same on the bottom side too. :banghead:

Pix to come when I get home. So? Am I just nick-pickey? Is it normal for an obvious flaw to be passed off as "ok" with these guns? Argh.... it's July before their next shipment arrives (not too far away), yeah, I could send it back to get another one... frustrating though... I've been waiting on this since the end of April. :(

When ordering guns through the mail from a dealer with a known return policy, it's based on the approval of the buyer once the gun is received and passes inspection.
You have a reasonable expectation to be a satisfied consumer, and the gun doesn't seem to meet that criteria enough to satisfy you.
But I think that you knew that already.
If you want to fix it yourself or can live with it forever the way it is then that's for you to decide.
But this grip issue sounds worse than the Uberti's and I don't see how in good concience you could choose to keep it.
And if you don't want to wait for another of the same model, you can always consider another model or an upgrade. You most likely will be paying for return shipping and that price will be more than worth making the exchange.
Cheer up! Maybe having this happen is a blessing in disguise! ;)

Pix...

Canon G9 12MP... first are with "normal" setting, the close-ups are with the "macro" setting. Pretty much blatent flaw in my book. :(

First the good part...

1858Bison002.jpg

Heck... you can see it in THIS shot...

1858Bison003.jpg

1858Bison004.jpg

Now... it gets UGLY in a hurry... first, with the gun in focus...

1858BisonGap001.jpg

Now... with the straw in focus THROUGH the gap !!....

1858BisonGap002.jpg

Yeah... I think I have to send this one back and insist on a replacement. This is just too blatent... they should've caught that and asked me if I was ok with it. I was told it was a "photo op" gun that was the last on the shelf. I hope someone caught the fugly angle on film and it doesn't get "proofed" too well. It'd serve 'em right.

At least I hadn't gone through the trouble of cleaning it and polishing the brass before finding it.

Well it turned out to be a really good "photo op" gun for you. It looks like one of the Pietta workers forgot to put some lunch in his winebox! :D

Jeez Ratdog68, if it weren't for bad luck, you'd have no luck at all with BP guns from that vendor. I'm genuinely sorry you're having to deal with these issues.

Hella good pic through the gap though! I think you missed your calling. You should be a photographer with a swanky gun magazine.

LOL Heck...

it's even a different vendor !! First Uberti (Sportsman's Warehouse)... now a Pietta (Traditions).

Well... back in the day... you photo'g'd yer own crime scenes... so, a feller had to learn how to capture what it was you were wanting to record. It's come in handy later in life.

If I'd ever photographed my old crime scenes, my camera would have been confiscated by the morality police. :neener:

Fortunately, they are forever stored in the old grey matter upstairs. Now if I could only remember their names!:evil::evil::evil:

Oh, Ratdog, sharp as ever.... :D

Not only is the gap there but it sure does look like the frame between the grips is not even square to the rest of the frame that holds the action and cylinder. Granted it may well be just the camera but I'm seeing it in one of the farther back views as well as in the two close ups.

No, that's what you're seeing...

The back strap is not on the same plane as the hammer, as it lays within its place within the frame. :barf: It does so with my other 1858 NMA.

Ok... sent an email off to Traditions....

and spoke with 'em on the phone as well this morning.

Received a return authorization number to send it back. They want the receipt included to have on record for reimbursement of the shipping costs (they'll get a copy). They want to determine whether the gun can be "fixed" or not... but, will need to see it in person to make that determination. (We'll talk on that later).

What I told them in my email was that I expect them to pick up the tab for the shipping, that I want them to hand select a jewel for me from the next shipment, and that the gesture of a spare cylinder included would be fine... given that I've been waiting since April, and having to deal with the condition of this offering.

I reminded them that this was the third BP gun of this particular order and that I have higher expectations of quality from them than this... especially upon seeing the condition of the previous two guns I received from them... and that my other 1858 NMA is far superior to this one's alignment between the backstrap and remainder of the frame.

They promised me (Jason) they'd get back with me promptly once they've had a chance to assess this one first-hand.

Stay tuned.

So... I'd received another "sorry it's taking us so long... another delay..." email last week. I followed up with a reply to them that I was very disappointed to hear it... and listed off the history behind this order and why I'm not very pleased (about now). Got back an apology for it taking so long and they're working on it. And... I followed up with clarifying that I'm not cursing them... just expressing concern and relating my disappointment in the list of problems to get it resolved.

This morning, Jason calls me and says he'd like to have a little of my time to talk to me and find out just where I am in my wants/needs. From his end of things, a number of issues are contributing to the delays. No shipment received from Pietta to them (Traditions). That means no parts either arriving from Italy for the Piettas. Further... pretty much all of Europe is on vacation for the entire month of August, so he can't even get answers to his questions on the status of the shipment(s). He also wanted to know how hard fast I am on wanting/needing the "as advertised" Bison gun. He's got one with a buggered barrel, and mine with the buggered frame, and he'd be able to/happy to make a nice/new gun out of the two for me. Or... he's got some other models available to him.

So, I tells him that I already have a Pietta 1858 NMA in blued steel, so I really don't need another one of them at this point in time, what other options do I have?

He's got two different factory samples which are not actually in production, would I be interested in one of them? One of them is (I think) a blued steel with "antiqued" simulated ivory grips with a Native American motif carved onto it... he's also got an all nickel plated frame/barrel gun with a gold plated cylinder and the simulated ivory grips that he'd be able/willing to send me as a substitute to the Bison model. Hmmmm.... An 8" barreled, all nickel plated .44 with a gold plated cylinder (a "one of a kind", more or less) which retails for more than double what I paid for the Bison... or a cobbled together Bison, or another one-off... it took me about half a second to think that one over.

Bottom line, I have the tracking number for the arrival of my new gun, it'll be the 8" nickel plated 1858 with gold plated cylinder and simulated ivory grips. Jason (Customer Service Mgr) at Traditions went above and beyond to do what he could to make me a happy camper. To be fair to them... HR Dept. allowed nearly everyone in that section to take vacation (overlapping) at the same time, so he hadn't been allowed to get to his own duties like he'd wanted... he'd had to fire a guy... no inventory from Italy to work with... ok, that's fair as an explanation of "why" things have been so delayed. But... he called me personally to get an idea of where I am in my requirements and offered me options to choose from... and got 'er done before the end of business the same day.

Otay... m'be I'll just have to order me up another Bison when they do finally arrive from Italy. In the meantime... Traditions shines as they resolve this matter for me.

Thanks... does Cabela's deal with Pietta and Uberti? I haven't been able to find a way to tell whether their offerning is one, or the other (with exception of the Walker). I was assuming they're strictly Uberti. I dunno.

Ratdog68

they carry Uberti and Pietta .

This is the Revolver I think your getting .

100_0617.gif
100_0615.gif

And it's a well built gun from Pietta too , very nicely done , especially the grips , HEAVY material and solid, no plastic on this beast .

Das Jaeger :D

PS....and as far as I know the only Uberti is the Walker , the 1848 little frame gun , and the Carbine Remington, the rest are Pietta strictly .

'Das a purdy one fer sure !!! I'll definately post up pix as soon as it arrives. "Good trade". :D Nice to know they carry both brands. Thanks for posting that one up... I'd love it if it has the fancy scroll work on it.

I called Cabela's yesterday to ask them when they were gonna send my my replacement 1851 Navy. They got the old one back on Tuesday. The return paper work said it take a full 2 to 3 weeks from the time they get the old one back. When I called them I told them that was unacceptable as they had sent me a defective weapon and I wanted one now because in 3 weeks it could be an out of stock item. They were very agreeable to sending out the replacement with express shipment at no charge. Should be here on Monday. Hope its a keeper!!!! :scrutiny:

p.s. I hope yours is a keeper!!!!
