A few months ago I moved out of the mire that was New York City to my own apartment upstate in Otsego county. The week I moved up here, I made my application for a pistol permit and just under 2 months later, in the mail I received my unrestricted carry permit.

So of course, the day I recieved my permit I had the local shop order me up a Baby Eagle 45. Not shabby for a first carry piece It's a little big, but I'm a big guy, so I dont forsee too much trouble, other than it weighs a ton... suppose if I run out of bullets, I can always beat the BG to death with it.

Just waiting on the holster now, then I'll have the option to carry.

Along with this, I also got a job this week and keeping to my promise, joined the NRA.

how well do you like the baby eagle? i've shot one in 40s&w, and loved how that shot. considering i sold my steyr m40 partly because the recoil was making me flinch, i was quite surprised how well the baby eagle had little felt recoil.
from the moment i started shooting the BE i was impressed how tight my groups were. either i was such a noob with my steyr or too much of a wuss, i couldnt get my steyr to group worth a darn.

so i've been thinking in the back of my head that a baby eagle in 9mm (or even 45acp) would be fun.

Well done, sir. If you look for spare mags, Tanfoglio and Witness marked magazines will also fit the Baby Eagle, as Tanfoglio made the frame and slide for it.
Of course, you could have moved to AZ....no registration/licensing/waiting period/AWB/magazine limit/purchase frequency restrictions....etc.

Welcome to free NY. Your permit process hauled through. Mine took me about 4 months. Congrats. Now utilize that permit to the fullest extent!

Took the new baby to the range, 120 rounds with no hiccups that weren't user inflicted. I'm a real newbie when it comes to handguns, so I can't really compare this to anything other than a Mark 23 I got a chance to use once.

I really need to work on accuracy now, I was all over the paper at 25 yards (did manage to crack a clay target at 100!). From here on in, I just have to drill with it.

The recoil is definitely there, but I can strong arm it so that the sights return on target, then I just have to aim a little and I get it again. I'm definitely not used to something with this short of a sight radius though, and it seems to shoot low.

Takedown and cleaning is an absolute snap, no tools or anything required.

Thanks for the tip on the mags, I need more than the 2 I have (real pain reloading all the time).

One thing I've noticed is that since permits are either so rare in this state or just not thought about, I haven't seen a carry off limits sign yet.

I wonder if Walmart allows employees to carry...

That's actually pretty darn good shooting. Were you shooting offhand at 25 yards? If so, you're doing good. If you were bench resting at 25 yards, work on a consistent sight alignment and the groups should shrink.

Busting a clay at 100 yards with a handgun ain't easy! If it took you a dozen shots to hit it, that's not unusual.

Just remember what you're training for. In a self-defense scenario, palm size groups vs. quarter size groups is not nearly as important as 1 second to the first hit vs. 5 seconds to the first hit.

If you want to improve fast, you might consider a training class.
