The Krag thread sort of fizzled, so let's try the venerable '98 Mauser. Who has a sporterized or customized 98?

This started as a Columbian 98 in 30-06. I usually build my Mausers in the old African safari rifle pattern, with a classic stock, barrel-mounted front sling swivel, banded front sight, turned down bolt handle (as in straight down and not swept back like more modern rifles) and folding leaf rear sight. Well, that's how this one began but as I was finishing the metal work I saw some laminated stocks being sold cheap on a clearance sale. So I bagged one. I still haven't decided if I like the combination of traditional and contemporary. But the stock would be easy to change if I want to down the road.

Actually most of mine started life as a commercial action so I guess they wouldn't count, here are the only two built from military actions.

This is a VZ24 I had built in .275 Rigby:

And my sporterized 1891 Argentine:

SigFanUSA- Is that a grenade firing attachment on the far left? Or some unusual front sight?

Browningguy- Beautiful wood on the 91. What is the difference between the .275 Rigby and the 7x57? Anything other than the name? Is it a true .275 bore?

here is one I am actually selling, Vz 24 action 6mm mauser;
squared , trued action,
Douglas bbl, custom stock,
custom trigger, xtra wide trigger pad

Will shoot anything from 70 to 100 grainers into the same hole!!
But you deff gotta be a righty!

i had one built - turned it into a 323 mauser. started out as an old brno (don't remember model - it had a 28"+ barrel and serious headspace troubles) 19" shilen barrel, walnut stock, zeiss scope, talley lightweight mounts, tubb firing pin, aluminum floorplate/trigger guard, bold trigger, 2-position safety, lightweight shroud, ruger 77 style bolt handle... don't remember what else. works fine, and i have an old turk action salted away that will probably re-surface as a 375 ruger in the next couple months if i can pull it off.

i think theres quite a few sporterised Mausers in circulation around norway, the army used them after WW2 and then updated them and such, then started selling them.

very fine rifles i hear :)

Ah... shows how much I know about military rifles. I only have one unaltered 98 and it's one sold a few years ago by one distributor as the "Mystery Mausers" because they carried no ID as to manufacturer or country of origin. Rumor was they were made in Yugoslavia after WW II to outfit Communist insurgents around the world.

Were the soldiers supposed to manually flip them open or would the air being pushed ahead of the bullet open the cover?
