I went to the range yesterday and rented a Glock 17 and a Springfield XD 9mm 4 inch. They both felt about the same to me, but I was considering a Glock 17c as well, but the range didn't have any, so I didn't get to test it. I can get a New Glock 17 for $489, a new 17c for $510, or a new XD 9MM tactical 5 inch for $520(I think. I can't remember the exact price was for this one, but I know it was in the $500-$530 range).

I preffer the glocks to knock off simply because i've fired well over 20,000 rounds threw various glocks and never had a malfunction.

I'm not a fan of compensated pistols. In a lowlight shoot, your more likly to be blinded by muzzle flash and it dose cost you fps down range, plus with a 9mm, it's really not needed. If its strictly a target pistol tho, go for the Glock 17c.

For a Combat pistol, just get the 17.

i say the xd tactical but be advised that that is a little high price that they are wanting for them. is that $520 + tax or $520ish out the door?

What exactly are you intending to use the pistol for primarily? Also I have to agree with the above poster who says to stay away from the Compensated. With a 9, the recoil should be manageable already, and sometimes the ports can get fouled up leading to jams, though i'm truthfully not sure how common this is.

The gun will be used at the range as a hobby, and at home for protection. I'm guessing that its $520 + tax, unless they put the price with tax on the tag. I was just looking at the guns that the range sold and came across the xd. The glocks I saw were at a pawn shop.

My vote is for the appropriately sized, uncompensated, 9mm Glock (17, 34, 19). I don't want a comp on anything I'm defending myself with. I've shot in low-light and confined spaces. A comp makes that not-fun. I'm still not totally convinced the XDs are as reliable, well made, and certainly don't have the after-market support of the Glock line.

I just went through this after Christmas and picked the XD9 Tactical. I was primarily looking for a new 9mm IDPA gun so I could cut back on shooting the .40.

Two primary reasons for my choice:

The XD fits my hand better. I found the XD grip really suited me, points almost identically to my BHP's that I use for carry.

To me the grip safety is a big deal, if you lighten the Glocks trigger enough to make it a really good range gun then it seems much less safe to me. I know, keep your finger off the trigger. But there have been a couple of cases of LEO's getting a shirt or something similar caught and having the Glock go off. For me, the grip safety is a little more piece of mind, and seems to have no effect on trigger pull.

Either gun will work well, I'd get the one that seems to fit your hand best. Schramms had the XD9 Tactical for $459 at the last Houston gun show by the way.

The XD, by the way, is not a knockoff of the Glock, a completely different firing mechanism, and a completely different grip feel. I guess if every gun with a plastic frame is a Glock knockoff then it's ok to consider it that way.

That's a "No-Brainer"...XD9 TAC!

Seriously, you have to try them all if possible and get the one that shoots the best for you.

cb, it really comes down to which one fits your hand best and which one you can shoot accurately. The grip angle on the Glock is different from that of the XD. That can make a difference in the "pointability" for you and that is a very personal thing.

Try each gun by bringing the gun from the ready position up to eye level and see which one automatically lines up for you. When the gun comes up in front of you the sights should be lined up. You should not have to adjust your grip to get the sights lined up. For me, a gun with a 1911 grip angle automatically lines up; the Glock does not. But that is just me. You need to determine which gun works best for you.

I din't select any of these as my choice would be a Glock 19. High capacity yet compact enough to use for concealed carry, large enough to easily be shot accurately.

I agree with that advice. In addition, if you can, go back to the range and rent the Glock and the XD again. This time bring a friend with a stopwatch. Use a 3"x5" index card if possible, or stick a contrasting color 3" to 5" circular target to the full size target (i.e. small bright target over black silhouette) for the test. Load each gun's magazine with the same number of rounds - 5 to 10 is usually a good number. Have your friend time you as you fire each gun as quickly as you can while keeping the rounds on the small target. Which do you shoot faster? Do you shoot one pistol significantly more accurately than the other firing against the clock? Use that info to help guide your decision.

Glock 17, there is little reason for the 17C as recoil isnt bad in a 9mm. Also those holes are one more thing to have to clean and allow dirt into your action. As for the XD............:barf: well they havent been around as long to prove themselves plus while a Glock isnt pretty

It sure looks a world better than this botched abortion :barf:

What fits YOUR hand the best?

I vote XD, but thats a personal preference, the XD's grip angle is better for me, the glocks is the worst for me I've ever held.

But it's all about YOU, which fits YOUR hand better?
The glock is a proven firearm, and the XD is quickly becomming a proven weapon in it's own right, I don't think you can go wrong with either.

BUT, just to throw a monkey into it, check out the S&W M&P also :D

If I were down to just those choices, I'd go for the XD, for ergonomic reasons. Namely, the glocks don't have any.

Glock 17, 3rd Gen current production: Simple, proven, very reliable action, high capacity, user-replaceable parts, very affordable factory/reliable mags, primo slide finish.

G17C: fine for shooting in competition, but not my choice in carry gun. The 9mm is not uber powerful, and I want all the cycling power I can get for real-world applications. I spent several days shooting next to guys with 22Cs. The muzzle flash at night, with duty ammo, was NOT night-blinding. However, I did get some projo shavings and pressure waves blown my way (canted pistol for firing around barricade). Not fun if you're not wearing full eye protection. But, like I said, if you're a gamer, go for it. Every little bit helps, eh?

XD series: Simple, very reliable action, mag capacity a bit limited for the size (My G23 holds only 1 round less than the full-size, non-tac XD-40 I owned), an overly-tall grip and slide not conducive to concealed carry, non-user-replaceable extractor, poor slide finish (almost like parkerizing, and wears off easy), cannot rack slide without fully depressing grip safety, mags more expensive than Glock but very reliable, trigger geometry/design wears sore on many shooters.

After owning both, my choice is the Glock. Sold the XD, as it was just too bulky for anything but home duty, and my duty and personal weapons are Glock. If the XD fits you much better and you actually shoot much better with it, then the choice for YOU is obvious.

Just curious... does the slide still have the "Made in Croatia" rollmark on top, just in front of ejection port?
