Don't know about the Croatia mark, but I do know the finish on all new XD's is melonite.

If your thinking a 17c, then look at a Glock 34. I have a 17, and do like the xd's as well. But the 17 was first and mine has had about 5,000 round through it without an issue....

the xd is like a crazy hybrid of the glock and a "pointable" gun. to me, i point w/ a glock, and then look down the sights and i know i couldnt hit a kitchen door. the xd on the other hand is way easier for me to align the sights. even tho the xd is patterned after the glock (plactic, safe trigger, no REAL safeties, and for utter reliability) i think that the xd is just plain easier to shoot. if i spent all of my shooting time familiarizing myself w/ and adjusting to a glock that would be one thing, but that is never going to happen. if the glock points well for you go for it, but ill stick w/ xd's.

Any idea when they changed that? Or have they always been melonite? I bought my XD from a dealer in '05. It didn't take long for the finish to wear from the corners. I have to say I did not notice rust except in the sight dovetails where the night sights scraped the metal during install.

At least at that time, I was amused that the slide was made in Croatia, just like all US Glock slides come from Austria...

No I don't but if you check at XD talk, those guys have the dates. I know all XD 45's have had the melonite treatment since production began.

Just because you bought your gun on '05 doesn't mean that's when it was produced, but like I said they have a lot of knowledgeable folks who can help you id when your gun was manufactured.

Good Luck

The Melonite finish came standard starting on all XD45s, and was phased in on the others. Someone here can probably give you an exact cut off date on the old finish. I'll try to find the link that someone posted here, but Melonite, Tennifer, and one other name that escapes are all the same finish that a German chemical company sells under the three names.

The entire firearms are imported from Croatia and Austria (respectively), not just the slides.

Different strokes for different folks. I'm of the opinion the average and average-sized person *can* shoot any quality firearm they want or have to. To be proficient under pressure, you have to build muscle memory anyhow, and shooting fundamentals never change. It's mostly mental, and some people don't adapt well to different tools, or they refuse to spend the time it takes to develop TRUE proficiency (under stress).

I voted for the Springfield XD. If it feels better in your hand then get that.

I do think that the Glock is a prettier gun but in the end I would get the XD as it fits my hand better and I really like the grip safety on it.

XD all the way

I didn't think much of the SA XD until a friend bought one and I shot it. I now own my own XD45 am going to get a long slide XD45 and a compact. I am selling or have sold my Gluck 21, 23, 30 and don't even look back at them. The XD is more accurate, quicker on target, higher or equal capacity, stronger takedown system, stronger rails, good grip safety etc. etc.

I voted for the G-machine. I've shot a few XD's, and while they're nice weapons with possibly nicer triggers, the Glock is just the one that works better for me. I don't like the bulkiness or grip angle of the XD, and feel the XD comes with a lot of pointless features (grip safety being a perfect example). The Glock is easier to carry, with more people making holsters, etc. IMO, it's simple, and it works. The best way I can say it at the moment, is the Glock is the Glock... it IS the original. The XD is more like a hybrid of several other designs, thrown together at random... like it's trying to be too much all at once.

-Slide looks like something out of a sci-fi videogame
-Trigger guard and takedown notch courtesy of SIG-Sauer
-Glock slide stop, manual (trigger) "safety" and thumbrests
-Kimber Ten-II style "grip safety"
-1911 meets Glock meets God-knows-what-else style grip

Thanks for all of the input.:) I don't really plan on doing any competetive shooting, so I don't think I'm gunna go with the 17C. Like a lot of you guys said, I think I'm gunna go back to the range and rent the 17 and XD again and just see which lines up better.

CBMyers....

Before you buy the 17c over the G17, I recommend you shoot both. You'll maybe suprised that there will not be much difference. Some other points to mention (Some have already) concerning compensation guns.
1. Cleaning issue of ports and slide.
2. Firing hot loads at night, the flames shooting up will cause night vision issues. Important if you are shooting in low light/self defense in the home
3. If you do ever get into competition shooting, like IDPA.... Compensated barrels are not allowed.
4. 9mm has no real kick that would justify the need of a 17C
5. 17C will be a bit more cash..... and for the value, you maybe better to get the 17 and buy boxes of ammo, holster, 3.5 connector for the trigger, extended slide release, etc.... with the savings.

Yes, I have a 17.... I see no reason for the 17c... Just my 17 cents....

My 17 has the 3.5 connector, extended slide release, well plug and Day/Night true glow sights. It has the trigger feel of a 34 but the smaller size for concealability.....

XD would be my choice. I considered buying a 17 with 3 10round mags and a 17 rounder from a guy who came into my work all the time for 450.00. I just couldn't get over the friggen size of the grips on it. I have small hands. So I bought the XD in 9mm and I like that piece of plastic as much as one can like plastic.

I recently faced the same decision and bought the 17. Also consider a Glock 19 if it feels better in your hand. Both are rock solid auto loaders. A XD in a 45 could be in my future. You can not go wrong with any of the choices listed.

How can you not consider an M&P? If you're going plastic... I love my M&P and I sold my XD, not that I didn't like the XD I just liked the M&P better. And, its American made, and stainless, and comes with interchangable grips. Just a thought in case you haven't considered the M&P.

I like the looks of those too. I only worry about losing the take-down tool. In you opinion should that be a concern?

Thanks

i was thinking of buying a range gun for fun, and had it narrowed down to a glock 17c. I was thinking that it would reduce the recoil over the glock 17, and that i could upgrade alot of the parts on it also. But then i figured a big old 9mm 1911 was the way to go haha, i still think i would pick up a g17c and then get a barstow barrel thats non ported for 100 bucks if you do idpa or carry it
