OK to use Goex FFg BP in pistols?

There's a fella who did some in depth research and allowed his papers to be copied and passed along. I saved them if anyone would be interested in reading it. It's lengthy so I'd need to email it.

Hi Rodwha,

I really like it http://oi68.tinypic.com/33xxc7l.jpg and it's true.

We get the swiss BP in can (plastic can of 500g or 1Kg). The powder preconised for pistol and other handguns is the swiss powder Nr1 like on the picture...
In here most of the people in France use the Nr2 in pistol because the legal limit of possession of black powder is 2Kg (since some years) that help for small rifles using the swiss2 so in this way only one powder for all. But I allways use the Nr1 for pistol and N2 in small bore rifles till .50 and swiss Nr3 in the Pedersoli Sharps .54 sporting (paper or linen cartidges)...

Now that I live in a the lost hole ass of a lost district of this country I do what I want: more than two Kg and also a bit of Pyrodex (also forbidden over here)...

Look at this: http://www.blackpowder.ch/powder/shooting-powder

Sorry if you can't understand all I want write, I learned a little bit writing at school but it was very, very, very long time ago and may be more, in a precedent life...

I do not recommend using modern FFFFg powder in cartridges.

Modern FFFFg is for the flash pan in a flintlock, not for cartridges.

This is right for metal cartridges (only 3Fg) but for paper cartridges you can: the modern powder is for it...

I can't say I've even seen 3F recommended for cartridges, but then I've not really looked at the smaller calibers.

I would never recommend 4F for use in anything other than very small calibers anyway, and though it may handle it fine I just don't have a need for more than what 3F Olde E/Swiss/Triple 7 supplies. However it certainly was used in larger calibers.

My 4.75" barreled uberti 45 colt put a 250 gr wadcutter through 5 one gallon water jugs filled with water. Load was 30 gr of goex 3f under .5 cc's of cream of wheat. Slightly compressed load. I did not think it would get through the 3rd jug as these bullets are about 8 bhn hardness.

From caliber .31 to caliber .45 only and over .45 3Fg is needed, for example you have to use the 3Fg for a .50 and over. It's a bit like Pyrodex P and Pyrodex RS but the swiss BP is not strong as the Pyrodex for an equal volume...

The 4 or 3Fg aren't so hot you think, only the price is really hot: ~90/95.00 US$ for one Kg... :(

As I said earlier, I have been using FFg for several 44 and 45 caliber cartridges for years now. One friend of mine uses FFg in 38 Special, we go in together on our volume buy of powder. If I was to start putting Black Powder into 38 Special I would use FFg too. I'm just too lazy to keep two different granulation of powder around. As I said earlier, all other things being equal, you will see between 60 - 100 fps more velocity out of any cartridge when using FFFg instead of FFg.
