I hope all the young bucks appreciate their eyesight and reflexes.

Any good 1911 shooter should be able to shoot 3" groups at 25 yards, right?

So, I tried shooting the '74 Commander at 25 yds. for the first time today.

The fading light is no excuse, either.

32 rounds, slow fire, offhand

You had fun though, right? If not, get optics!

And let's see the other target, too.

Yep, definitely had fun.

The other target looks about the same.

Those three on the "A" give me hope that it, indeed, can be done.

I've committed to shoot a Bianchi Cup match Sat. morning, so I'm just concentrating on having fun and getting to run a couple hundred rounds thru the old Commander.:)

Good luck at the match. Hope it proves to be a super day.

Also, thanks for the photo of your range. That looks like an idyllic spot for some shooting therapy.

First time out and you shoot minute of bad guy. Keep practicing. and remember getting old beats the alternative. :)

"Aim small, miss small"

You'll probably have much better groups if you shoot at a target that provides a more specific aiming point. Put one of those 3" or 4" sticky orange targets (or color in a circle with a black magic marker) in the middle of your big blank sheet of paper so you have a reference point.

I didn't even think about that. Thanks

I've been shooting those IDPA-type paper targets at closer range, so I just used them.

In my experience over the years with Commanders, they have never grouped as tight as the full size 1911.

Good advice and it's what's missing from the current "tactical" trend of hits vs scores. I see it when we qualify because we're shooting at the coke bottle Q targets and any hits count as long as there in the silhouette. We shoot a 50 round course of fire twice, back to back, and to qualify you need a minimum of 40 hits out of 50 shots each time. It doesn't matter if they're concentrated in a 6" circle center mass or spread all over the target like birdshot. What's worse is that many are happy to qualify and will not do a thing to try and improve, the attitude being if they're good enough for the State of Maine then that's good enough.

ETA: After rereading this I see that I went a bit off topic, sorry about that.

I used to think a red dot on a pistol was a pox, but since my eyes have let me down, I enjoy them on a few handguns.

One of my answers to the problem of old eyes.

Walkalong,

Nice guns! I can see that some where in my future. Right now 1.50 readers are still doing the trick.

P.S. Does brass bounce off the bottom of that Aimpoint sometimes?
BTW Doc, fading light is a fine excuse

Doc,

From one "seasoned" Buck to another, let's look at things a little different. Even at 25 yards, more than 75% of your hits were kill shots, and we all know that in real life the actual distance will be under 10 feet. I also agree that you (and me) need different targets and sights with our "seasoned" eye sight. Guns And Gear featured a front sight that was a large hollow white circle used for combat/low light situations that would be perfect, but the brand name escapes me at the moment, maybe someone on the forum will know. Hang in there brother!;)

It's pretty hard to shoot 3" groups @25 yards with any handgun with iron sights held in palm(s).

1.0 for me. The let me see the sights fairly well, but they blur the target enough I can't see the bullet holes often times.

Dunno, doesn't seem to, but there is a nice burn mark on it.
