I got a Western Field m72 .30-30 level action. It has iron sights but they are less than accurate. I have shot rifles with iron sights, and I'm confident in using them. I am looking to mount a scope on this rifle. I have done some research and found the Weaver makes a scope mount base. I ordered a #80 base. the mounting screw holes are correct but it is too long. I need a base for my nice new scope. Taking any suggestions and the base doesn't have to be a Weaver. Thanks for any help or advise.

You have a Mossberg 472, if that is of any help. They were based on a Marlin 336, but I don't know if bases are interchangeable.

Sorry I didn't get back to you, and if you noticed, there is A, B, & C versions listed for the same base #701390 that's designated for the different companies. It's likely that they are the same, but I don't know for sure.

Shorten the new base to what you want. But mount your scope and work out the eye relief first, before you start cuttin. This is especially true if you mount a variable as the rear bell and zoom ring will put he rear scope mount pretty far forward. You may need to keep the length to get enough spread from rear base to front?

If you go with a simple 4x or something (plenty of scope), it will mount up nicely and you can trim the front of the "rail" :)

Same gun different issue. When I put ammo into the port its really hard like there is extra resistance. Any suggestions I check on my own or should i take it to a gun smith?
