Old Sears Brand Winchester

Looked at my grandad's old Sears brand (made by Winchester) pump from 1951 tonight. He has had it in the closet since he bought it 62 years ago and never fired it. We tried it out with some snap caps and found that you cannot rack the slide back unless the trigger has been pulled. This means the only way to unload it is to fire it and then rack the slide. Any thoughts on what might be wrong?

Are you saying that the slide release is not functional ?

We need some more info. What model is it? Does the gun have a slide release? If it doesn't, it should unlock if you push forward on the forearm before pulling it back.

There is a slide release button somewhere. Unless it is broken you should be able to unchamber round without firing it.

If it was made at Winchester plant for Sears Roebuck it has to be Model 1200 or some kind of variant of that gun. It is hard to know w/o looking at the gun as Savage Model 28 is very easy to mistake for Winchester Model 12.

Look at the cross reference list on Numrich. I really doubt that the shotgun is made by Winchester. Their relationship with Sears did not start till the late 60's to the best of my recollection.

It more likely made by High Standard. It has a slide release somewhere, probably on the LH side behind the trigger guard.

I bought one new in 1973 at the end of the season. it was stamped Magnum on the barrel and had a 3 inch chamber. I was using it for duck hunting at the time and purchased 3 inch magnum shells as labeled from Sears. I proceeded to hunt with the gun and the second shell I fired resulted in the slide ceasing up and would not eject the spent hull. I had to remove the barrel to get the remaining shells out of the gun.

I returned the gun to Sears and they promptly replaced it with a new one just like it. the gun was never fired until the first day of hunting season the next year. I remember skipping out of school the first day of the season to go. there was a fresh snow and I nailed a rabbit the first 5 minutes and thought this was going to be a great day. I kicked up a second rabbit and the shotgun once again ceased up on the second shot.

I was angry and drove to Sears and walked right into the store holding the gun by the barrel and the stock slung over my shoulder like a club (not smart at all looking back at it). straight to the sporting goods counter. within a minute the manager was there and removed the part and replaced it on the spot saying he could not keep giving me a new shotgun. they told me a screw was shearing off do to the magnum shells I was using. I traded the shotgun the next day. maybe you found my old shotgun?
