Direct quotes from a pretty cool kid (names changes to protect the innocents). His assignment was to tell a story in the 3rd person, while being recorded. Here is his narrative, verbatim and uncorrected.

The Range
narrated by Tyson 4-15-07

"First thing that we did at the range was the pistol and we Nathaniel, it was his birthday. He invited Tyson and Joey and their dads, well not Tyson's dad. And with one of the pistols it flung right back at my head. And it was a 45 and it knocked me right in the head which hurt. And I had to drink some Diet Dr Pepper and just plain Dr Pepper. So next thing that we did was shotgun. There was something new that I found out was there. Clay pigeon launcher, which was cool, and Mr.[cpileri] had to use his pocket knife to like open like the thing to release the clay pigeon and it went flying and one of the grown-ups shot the clay pigeon and Mr. [cpileri] guess what he did? Shot the clay pigeon. And once he even shot it in the direct middle. And the rest of the times, I got to shoot the clay pigeons, all by myself. So the last thing we did was the rifles. And I forgot to take home my target, my shotgun target and my rifle target. My rifle target would be hard to put in the wall because it was made out of cardboard. Which is hard to hang up on the wall and it had two big circles which I shot, I shot, and I shot. And then we went out for burgers. Mr. [cpileri] and Mr. [cpileri's friend] had a double burger and I had a plain burger, so did Joey, so did Nathaniel. And some tots. And then Mr. [cpileri] drove me back to the house. The end."

Whew! So imagine an excited little boy dictating that at about 100 miles per hour with all the associated body movements and emphasis on the superlative that only a 6-year old boy can provide.

We all needed a cute story today, I think. Thanks 'Tyson', for providing it!

Totally AWESOME! As long as they're smart enough to be safe, good on you. I remember my old man taking me out deer hunting and I got to take my BB gun. Before we hit the field, he had me sight in on a hay bale at what felt like 300 yds (in retrospect it was about 50). He told me I hit all 5 out of my 5 practice shots. As soon as he trusted me with a .22, at the local range. Good times.

Good on you for taking those children shooting.
