If you could have one and only one factory handgun, what would it be?

I would have a tough time chosing. I guess my choice would be between the old Ruger Super Single Six that came with an extra 22 mag cylinder or a 3"Heavy Barrel Model 13.

What about you?

For what, everything? Concealed carry, home defence, range, and plinking? Or do I get a shotgun for home defence?

For everything, a 1911 Commander type gun would do fine.

If I planned on carrying it, a CZ PCR or CZ P-01.

If I wanted a centerfire and wasn't planning on carrying it, a NRM Colt 1991A1.

If I needed tons of cheap shooting, probably a SIG Trailside.

Or you could combine the last two and get the NRM with a Marvel conversion... Or the CZ and a Cadet conversion for that matter... I could live with either combo.

:p

one, and only one factory handgun

I thought it might be kinda interesting to find out what some of members would chose if they could just legally own one handgun. I don't think that choice will be made next year, but we may have start thinking along those lines eventually.

For someone working heavy stock in Montana or running a trap line in Alaska, they might chose a big bore 5 shooter. Someone with severe arthritis, maybe a 32 Magnum. A brick of 22 rf rounds would go a long way. Someone with rotator cuff sugery like me might pick something light. A guy or gal with 'tennis elbow' might place low recoil high on a list of priorities. A WWII vet might chose the Walther or Luger that he smuggled back stateside in his duffel bag. A varmint hunter might want to chose a singleshot with interchangable barrels. Yours truly thinks that just about the closest thing to a 'go anywhere, do any thing' handgun' just might be a .36 revolver in a handy size.

Well, you get the idea.

There is a lot of collective information here in this forum. Lot of us (most) have had limited personal experience in the wide variety of hand guns out there.

Its just one choice that would come closest to suiting your needs and situtation.

What would your choice be?

a stainless 1911 frame, with a multitude of slides and barrels to swap onto it... stainless commander (for CCW/IDPA), stainless govt (CCW + open carry), IPSC racegun comp'ed .45, blued target .22, one of those carbine conversion rigs I saw a few years ago, etc...

I would also have to investigate the multi-caliber capabilities of a 1911 frame, could I setup my .45acp to also shoot 10mm fairly quickly? What about a Para-Ord wide body frame, would all these different slides slip right on one of them?

Ed Brown Classic Custom in stainless / blue, at $2,895.00, this one cost more than all my guns combined, but if you can only have one, have the best!

A 4" RB Model 19 or a 3" RB Model 13, depending on whether or not I lived someplace where handgun hunting was a possibility.

The 13 is a much more useful totin' piece, but the 4" RB 19 is downright beautiful, has better sights and a longer tube, is possessed of much more graceful lines and proportions, would be a more appropriate target and hunting piece while still being totable, and is much better looking.

Did I mention that it's gorgeous? :uhoh:

As big of a 1911 fan as I am, with the choice of only one I would have to go with either the .357 or .44 revolvers. With handloading, they are very versatile and would cover both hunting and defensive uses.

That would be a tough choice. I do most of my hunting with a rifle or a bow so I'd keep one of my .40 Glocks, probably my G27. It carries like a little gun, shoots like a big gun and has had perfect reliability through 14k rounds.

I'd probably go with a 1911, and get a .22 slide to go on it.
Other than that, I think a .357 would be a good choice, too.
