One knife you'd take on this trip?

Okay, you're going on a plane that will drop you off in an unknown area in the woods. You have nothing with you but you can take one knife for survival. What would it be?

I'd like to take one that has all that survival stuff (fishing line/hooks, matches, etc) in the grip. Would that be good to take? If so, what's a good one?

Generally those hollow handle knives are prone to breakage. This is due to the weakness of the area where the blade meets the handle. Chris Reeve has remedied this by making the whole knife out of a single piece of steel.

For me I would take a Dave Beck WSK or a Cold Steel SRK.

Not too many options if you limit yourself to such little benefit. Now considering that you can put any good sheath knife in a ... sheath, you can select a sheath that would allow you to carry much more than a knife handle would carry. Camillus even built a sheath for the Beckers that would take a Altoid tin in the outer pocket just for this.

Back to the original question, Chris Reeve or Randall are the only 2 dependable handle kit knives I'm aware of. CR has several while there is only 1 Randall.

As mentioned already, except for Chris Reeve's knives and the Cold Steel Bushmaster, the hollow handle knives are weak where the blade joins the handle.

I'd take my Becker Combat/Utility 7. Not too big, not too small. Rugged. Comfy handle.

Dr. Rob,

Ah yes! I would probably try to get a custom sheath with a pouch on the outside for my SAK Soldier.

I would take TWO knives. One big and one small. That Dave Beck WSK really looks interesting for heavy field use. I'd also need a small game/skinning/carving knife with a 3-4" blade.

Jake01,

If only one knife, it would be an Ontario Bagwell Hell's Belle. Mr. Bagwell himself skinned a mouse with one of his knives. Frankly, my hands aren't that steady, but his recommendation is enough for me. I want a blade that can do it all- because it's got a heavy enough blade to make a shelter, skin game, or keep my old carcass from being a meal for some critter hungrier than me... Shucks, you never ALWAYS know what's around the next corner, so why be satisfied with less than the best all around knife yet invented? Go Bowie, or don't go at all...

Regards and Respects,
Carter, oldpaladin, out...

The Belle would certainly be one of the primary choices but I think for a survival situation in the wooded wilderness I would take the Ed Fowler camp knife with sheep horn handles.

Good all around knife with great ergonomics and strength.

SRK may be too small for all thats necessary in the wilderness but it would certainly be better than most other choices in the size range. I have one permanently in the "go" bag stored and ready to go anywhere I need to in a hurry.

Dave Beck WSK, what the Tom Brown Tracker aspires to be when it grows up.
