Uberti 1862 police blowback problem?

Just got this 1862 last week love this gun, but their is a blow back problem. I know it is a blow back problem, because cap fragments are between the hammer and frame after most shots before the gun is re-cocked. This happens even with reduced loads. I ordered some slix-shot nipples but they are to tall for the cylinder, and noticed the 1862 nipples are slightly shorter than the standard uberti nipples although the threads are the same. So what have you guys that have one of these great little gun done to solve this problem. I really want to stay away from the jb weld thing, it's a blow back problem anyway. Thanks

If you don't want to use JB Weld or similar solution to close the hammer slot, then work on the edges of the slot to make it less likely to grab a cap off the nipple. De-burr it, round the edges a bit, and kinda countersink it a bit so it will tend to leave the cap on the nipple. Sometimes this helps. Sometimes. Got to be careful not to remove too much metal; it still has to give the cap a good smack.

Good luck with the Slix-Shot nipples. I did not have good luck with them on my 1851s and 1860s, no experience with the 62s. Went to Tresos and factory hammer springs.

One other trick that appears promising, but not completely confirmed with scientific experimentation, is to get the ball seated as close to the chamber mouth as possible regardless of the size of the powder charge. If using a small powder charge, take up some space with cornmeal or cream of wheat filler, or lube wads, or both. The hypothesis is (and I stress it is only a hypothesis but given to me by some experienced cap and ballers) if the ball is seated deeply in the chamber, then the ball spends more time getting to the barrel, allowing pressure to build up higher. So a deeply seated ball may increase blowback, even though the powder charge is small.

I've put Tresco nipples on all my 2nd Generation Colts. Problems with caps are very infrequent on my guns. I do crimp the caps a little for a tighter fit. There is also a technique of flicking your wrist to the side as you cock the piece, this will allow cap fragments that may be loose to fall to the side.

The Trescos should do the trick. I would try them before the JB Weld. Once you do that, you cannot use the safety pins as designed and it will only allow you to load 4 chambers on your 1862. The hammer will have to rest on an empty chamber after you fill the slot.

I put Treso nippels on one Pocket Police and have had absolutely no problems with caps jamming or blow back. A second Pocket Police still has the stock nipples, no problems yet with that one either. Both revolvers are made by Uberti.

Sometimes I pinch the caps before placing them onto the nipples. That depends on the brand of caps for me. I guess I am just lucky.

Tinpan I had the same problem with mine when I got it. I think the flash holes in mine were too large thus blowing the hammer back on firing.

I put Track of the Wolf stainless nipples on it. No more problems.

I always replace the stock nipples with hardened steel (blued) or the stainless steel nipples from TOW. I found that there are just way too many problems with the factory original nipples including blowback. Love that '62 Police, with its half rebated fluted cylinder!!!

Thanks I'll give tresso nipples a try, I have never tried them before, It dose look like the flash holes in the stock nipples are to big and I was careful to look at what was happening, and the cap fragments are between the hammer and frame after the gun is fired and before it is recocked so I think that is from blowback. I will work on the hammer slot as well, their is seam in the middle of the hammer visible from when it was molded that wasn't cleaned up at the factory. This could easily become my favorite gun.

I bought a set of TOW SS nipples for my 62 and achieved a 85% success rate. I thought that the slix nipples had a good idea venting their nipples but they didn't have nipples to fit so I had a set of the TOW's drilled but have not had the time to try them out yet.

I had something hit me on the side of my face when i shot yesterday im thinking it was part of a percussion cap from blowback. It was hard enough to leave a mark pretty weird. Glad i make it a habit to wear safety glasses.

For those of you that have an Uberti pocket model and fixed their cap jam problem with nipples, was this the only "fix" you made?

I've read of many "fixes" all together without 99% reliability.

I really want one of these pistols, but not if it has problems of this magnitude, and needing so much work to get them to operate well enough.
