On a whim, I took out the Savage 64 takedown to shoot today. I purchased this little rifle just before COVID shutdown, in February 2020, $180.02 total, and between trying it out after purchase and playing with some modifications (magazine release extension, mcarbo trigger kit, and added sling studs), I had probably put 30 rounds through it since purchase. It's got a 4X32 Simmons scope and Warne QD rings on it. And before anyone thinks that I'm really that recoil-sensitive, the Limbsaver pad provides a better LOP for the little guy, I swear!:p

So, today, despite a 10-20mph and gusty wind, I took it out....and had a ball. Target 1 is 10 rounds of Federal Automatch, Target 2 is 10 rounds of CCI MiniMax, and Target 3 is 10 rounds of Federal Champion bulk, all at 25 yards, prone, no bags or bipods. And, yes, I pulled those two low and left flyers in the first and third targets; even with an mcarbo trigger kit, I wouldn't call that trigger "good," although the kit takes it down to a very sloppy 3.5#.

Put 90 rounds total through it (50 of the Federal Champion), with only a single FTE...last round of a Federal Automatch magazine about halfway through the strings. Also took the rifle to 50 yards and could hit 50% on a 2" metal target from there. One of the neat things is that the first target is cold bore, with the scope just reattached. I never readjusted the scope for any of these shots. Those Warne QD rings really hold zero, and I like that little Simmons scope with it's quick focus eyepiece, although the scope was a full $10 at the Bushnell outlet last year.:what:

It all makes me wonder, though, what this rifle would do with a higher mag scope, better ammo, and a front bag rest. One of these days, I want to do an Appleseed, and if it wasn't for the crappy magazines, I wouldn't be afraid to take this gun instead of my planned 10/22.

Of course, after I was down in the bottom shooting and cursing those stiff Savage magazines, I remembered I had this in the little takedown bag I keep the rifle in::cuss:

So how about you? Anybody out there have a 64 Takedown they adore? If it wasn't for the 5#10oz weight with the scope, I'd think this was the best of the takedowns for a BOB. Somebody out there needs to make a better aftermarket trigger and a fiber-wrapped, light barrel. I'd buy them!

Not a 64, but just for fun, I put a quality scope on my son’s CZ 513 with its terrible trigger.

Took it to the range and shot off of a proper rest and bag.

Managed some decent groups, many under an inch.

You just never know with these 'inexpensive' rifle.

I have a Marlin Papoose. I have to figure out a way to make a secure forend "addition" that takes advantage of the sling stud sticking out the front. Just enough to get a proper forend rest with. The short, no forend stock is the biggest drawback. None the less, I can get some pretty decent groups with it - good enough to bag a squirrel at 25 yds. if needed, which in reality, IS the purpose of this type of gun.;)

Diversified Innovative Products offers a few parts for the Sav 64, but not a trigger. Yet...

I have one of their trigger packs on my Marlin Papoose. It replaced the broke-into-four-pieces plastic trigger guard and trigger with a very fine crisp light trigger. Excellent product and company. Maybe they would entertain making one for the Savage.

I recently modified my Papoose. I built a collapsing stock chassis for it that takes an AR15 pistol grip. I mounted a three slot Picatinny rail on the front and added the larger of the Magpul AFGs to it.

When taken down and collapsed, total length is the length of the barrel; 16". This was pre-duracoat.

Definitely like the AFG - did you try mounting it on the stock, or only after you went "stockless"? I like my original stock and want to try adding the AFG to that.

I only settled on it once i swapped to the new "stock". A .625 railed gas block from an AR will slide on the barrel once you remove the front sight. I almost went that way but it was a bit bulky.

The location of my AFG required it to be slotted around the magazine.

Your machinist capabilities are far beyond mine. I figured that the AFG was slotted and that I can probably do, carefully, with the tools and skills I have. Assuming that I go that route, I'll have to come back and post a pic of what I come up with.

I like to tinker! You could likely craft a mount pretty easy. Use the front trigger guard screw as the rear picatinny rail screw and use a simple "L" bracket coming off the front sling stud for the front screw.

The AFG can be cut easily with a hacksaw or dremel tool. Then file the sharp and burred edges. The AFG clamps even enough on my 1.25" section of rail that i dont need the cross bolt in a slot.

Just remember one thing. It is still just a .22 lr. Should you ever need it for anything bigger than bunnies you may find youself wanting more.

BB94 - thanks for the tips. I'd thought I'd just drill a hole through the bottom of the stock to mount the rail section, but I'll have to noodle on it a bit when I get the parts (ordered and on their way).
jeepnik - true enough, but I'd rather have a .22 than nothing ;).

OK, so this is what I've come up with (dry fitting, no modifications) using the tips from BB94 (front screw of trigger gard to secure the rail, no notching of the AFG). It fits my shooting "stance" for this rifle pretty well. I do need to do a bit of sanding to make the rail fit the stock better - it's flat and the stock is obviously curved. Other than that this might just be the ticket.
