I shop at Streicher's all the time. They are completely stand up people, they are the largest supplier to LEO depts in the upper midwest. If you got some tattered boxes and you feel you got somehow damaged goods, call them. They deal in case lots most of the time and selling a few boxes her and there is just them being nice to the public. I know that sounds bad, but I have been there when orders for pallets of ammo from different law enforcement orgs come in. Usually the stuff they sell is the freshest as it goes out as soon as they get it.
On a practical point, I often shoot ammo loaded in the 40' and 50's it works fine, ammo loaded last year is nothing to worry about.
According to one rep for a ammo manufacturer, the reason some catalogs only list 20 round boxes is to allow big box sellers to sell you 20 rounds of ammo for a buck a shot, instead of 30 cents a shot.
For a while, Streichers was selling loose packed ammo in 250 round cartons for about $40 a carton. The have been asked not to sell that to the public by the manufacturer after several big box stores complained. (it was not just streichers who were selling it that way, and Gander and Galyans was buying it and reselling it as well.)
I would say again, you can trust streichers, stand up people.
