I shop at Streicher's all the time. They are completely stand up people, they are the largest supplier to LEO depts in the upper midwest. If you got some tattered boxes and you feel you got somehow damaged goods, call them. They deal in case lots most of the time and selling a few boxes her and there is just them being nice to the public. I know that sounds bad, but I have been there when orders for pallets of ammo from different law enforcement orgs come in. Usually the stuff they sell is the freshest as it goes out as soon as they get it.

On a practical point, I often shoot ammo loaded in the 40' and 50's it works fine, ammo loaded last year is nothing to worry about.

According to one rep for a ammo manufacturer, the reason some catalogs only list 20 round boxes is to allow big box sellers to sell you 20 rounds of ammo for a buck a shot, instead of 30 cents a shot.

For a while, Streichers was selling loose packed ammo in 250 round cartons for about $40 a carton. The have been asked not to sell that to the public by the manufacturer after several big box stores complained. (it was not just streichers who were selling it that way, and Gander and Galyans was buying it and reselling it as well.)

I would say again, you can trust streichers, stand up people.

Wolfpackin,

Let me confirm that what I received from Mirage was two boxes of Speer Gold Dot Gold Dot 135 gr. .38 Special +P GDHP, #53921. Also, the boxes are marked with "Speer LE" and "Law Enforcement" on top of the box and on the end panels they say "Duty Ammunition." The boxes look, well, brand new and the rounds are, for lack of a better word, shiny.

The person I spoke to at Mirage was not only very helpful, but enjoyable to talk to; since this was Tuesday after the BCS championship game, we spent a couple of minutes talking about UF's stunning win over Ohio. He did mentioned that these boxes were the LE packaging of the Gold Dot 135 gr. .38 Special +P GDHP.

Lastly, I can not imagine them not going "bang."

I've been ordering Gold Dot's from Mirage for some time now. They are great to deal with and have the best prices I've found anywhere.

Glad to hear from Peabody and Nails that Mirage delivers the goods. Mine should be arriving any day now. Will report when I get them.

I'd be a bit wary about Streichers. I received some 50rd. boxes of 9mm and 45 Gold Dot ammo today and it looks like old stock to me

Just a follow up. I sent Streichers a polite e-mail regarding my concern the ammo was old stock. Told them I would shoot it up for practice, but was curious if they had any explanation about the appearance of the ammo. Never heard back from them. I wonder if Speer would be willing tell me the manufacture date based on the lot number?

The ammo is almost certainly fine, but I replace my SD ammo annually, so it doesn't make sense to replace 1 batch of year old ammo with another.

Anyway, I'll order from Mirage next time. Streichers charges sales tax in California, so Mirage is a better deal all around. I also don't appreciate a non-reply to a legitimate customer e-mail regarding a $160 order.

peabody304,

Thanks, interestingly enough the box I got from Streichers is completely different than the one you described. This leads me to believe that the stock may indeed be older. It is the same item number #53921 so I'm sure it is the same product. It looks like Speer is trying a new marketing angle emphasizing the short barrel performance numbers and upgrading the boxes. But as I mentioned before, I don't think this round was available before 2003 so the stock can't be too old. Anyway I paid $4-$5 more per box at Streichers so it seems that the best place is indeed Mirage!

You know for some reason I seem to be emotionally attached to this thread, maybe because I feel as though we have beaten the market and big box stores as a result of our comparative shopping experiment here.

Soooo...I've got a related question just to keep it going. What ammo for .38 Special in standard loads do you use for target practice? The best price and quality and where you purchased it. The best I've found is Rem. UMC 125 gr. FMJ (50) box for about $11.50 at Walmart and Federal's American Eagle FMJ for $11.00 at Sportsman's Warehouse. I liked the Rem. UMC much better. I'm surprised there is nothing like the WWB I buy for my .40 at Walmart (100) box FMJ for $18.00.

Hope to hear back from you guys out there.

It seems like the last time I bought .38 special ammo from wal-mart, they had a 100 round box of remingtons for 15.97

Some ammo you just cant beat reloading for if you want to save money, or shoot a lot. .38's are one of the few rounds I still load for practice. I can load +P level ammo for about $5 a 50 round box.

So far I've shot Magtech (not a bargain) and American Eagle, but I also would like to find a good bargain on practice ammo. Another thing to consider: there was a recent thread on the problems snubbies can have with .38 Spcl with a 115 and 125 grains load. I will dig up the thread (when I come back from work) since it is important to consider the load as well as the price.

For .38 plinking/practice, I use CCI Blazer or handloads. I've been trying to use up my existing stock of commercial ammo and switch more to handloads to save money. Handloads are Berrys plated (125 or 158gr) & Win 231 powder or 148gr. lead wadcutters & Bullseye powder.

I just paid 23.58 (before tax, wierd Wal-Mart pricing...) for a 100-pack of WWB in .38 Special.

Just ordered 5 boxes of GDSB 38+P, along with 5 boxes of Gold Dot 9mm, from Mirage Technologies. It's $16 per 50-round box, plus about $2 shipping per box.

I feel like an idiot for spending the same money on 20-ct boxes previously. What a sham.

Thanks for this thread.

Hey Wolfpackin,

I got the Gold Dots from Mirage today. The boxes are marked as Peabody described and the rounds are identical to 20 round case I got from Midway. Will try them at the range but can not see how can they be different. All in all, superb bargain. Will be shoping more from Mirage. My next order will be some Gold Dots 9mm.

Yup, +1 Mirage.

Just got Rem. UMC .38 Special 130 gr. MC (50) for $12.44/box at WalMart.
Not great; price went up about $1.00 per. They also had UMC JHP +P for about $25.00 per (100).

Well I decided to try Mirage. I got a box of .357, 125gr Speer Golddots Item 53920, one box of 50 rounds. Cost was $25.00 but they charged me $10.00 shipping. I didn't ask about the shipping before hand and thought it a tad high. Still, I can't buy Golddots around here for less that $14-$15.00 per box of 20 so it's still not a bad deal.

So where do you guys get the best deal on other bands like Blazers, etc?

God Bless
Gideon
