Only in Florida could you stop a bullet with a bra.

Seat Belt, Bra Save Woman From Gunshot

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- A 44-year-old woman escaped serious injury from a gunshot Sunday thanks to her seat belt and a thick bra strap, authorities said.

Robin Key, 44, of Riverview, Fla., was shot through the windshield of the car she was riding in Sunday. She said she felt a searing pain in her shoulder.

Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies said a .38-caliber bullet smashed through the windshield then bounced off Key's shoulder - thanks to a seat belt and a thick bra strap.

The copper-jacketed slug landed in her lap.

"It's a big bullet, but you had all those forces acting against it," Hillsborough sheriff's spokesman J.D. Callaway told the St. Petersburg Times. "It's very rare that something like that occurs. She's very lucky. You know, we're just glad she came out OK."

Key said she didn't know why anyone would shoot her. Sheriff's deputies later arrested two men in connection with the shooting several hours later.

Authorities said they do not have a motive for the shooting.

gotta get me one of those

I don't suppose they said what brand it was....? Inquiring female minds want to know. :D

Over on TFL they have an ongoing thread, "Your mama's so tactical..." and when it gets back online, this one HAS to get on there!

What round for bras?

What bra for self defense?

What materials for bullet resistant bras?

You momma's bra is so tactical...

"This just in, SWAT Teams all across the nation issued pink bras..."

AK or AR-15 for bra straps.

I want nachos.

etc...

Yeah, only in Flordia lol haha:D It must have been extra stong to keep those puppys in and the bullet out. lol

This topic is so bractical. :neener:

Now I definitately will believe all those stories of padded jackets stopping bullets during the Korean War.

well i would also say there was so "give" behind that bra strap.

I have never seen a thick strap on a 36B, I have seen them on shall we say "more generously proportioned" items of underclothing.

Miracle fabrics, a foot or more or give, ......

Funny that the article doesn't give much credit to the laminated safety glass the .38 punched through before striking the lady.

According to Dirty Harry Calahan the .38 wasnt supposed to make it Through the windshield:scrutiny:

Quote from Dirty Harry- "I've seen .38's bounce of windshields"

What movie was that from?

Windshield glass can rob an awful lot of a bullet's energy/velocity. Seat belt straps are also pretty tough. If the bullet was deformed by the windshield, or began to tumble so it hit the seat belt sideways, the bullet would lose even more energy punching a bigger than caliber hole in the seat belt.

So after punching through the windshield and the seat belt, there just wasn't enough energy left to penetrate the bra strap. In addition, materials with some strength, a bit of elasticity and a soft backing are hard to penetrate.

There are two lessons here:

1) If God is with you that day, unreliable cover can stop a bullet that is coming your way.

2) Intermediate barriers can rob a lot of energy and significantly reduce the penetration/wounding/incapacitation potential of handgun bullets. Starting out with more energy is a good thing if intermediate barriers are in the risk assessment.

Well, those were pretty bra-zen criminals, shooting during the day like that! I'm glad they got bust-ed . . . shows the cops are keeping a-breast of the situation in their area.

+1.

I have heard stories of windshields sucessfully deflecting small caliber (including .38) bullets. Even if the bullet managed to push through the windshield without being successfully defleced it still had that force working against it slowing it down greatly.

I also know just how strong sealt belts are. I, and others I know, have used seatbelts to tow disabled vehicles as well as to "snatch" vehicles stuck in muddy rutts free. Believe me when I say seatbelt are made to withstand A LOT of force.

This persons real luck is in the fact that these two obsticles were in the path of the bullet to slow it down before reaching the bra strap.
