Only One Gun: Do you know.........

My father.

In 1937 he bought a new Colt woodsman. He had a .22 rifle and he loved to informal target shot and plink, but he was one of those old depression era guys who were practical to the point of extreme frugalness. His attitde was that since he had a .22 rifle and a .22 pistol, he didn't need anymore guns. Then when he came home from WW2, he gave the rifle to his brother, and just had the Colt .22 pistol. I was just a little kid in the years just after the war, and he taught me to shoot on that woodsman. Untill his passing in 1981, the Colt .22 woodsman was his only gun, and he thought I was nuts for buying more guns than I needed.

But, he never lost his love of plinking with that liitl Colt, and he was a wicked shot with it. He'd pling empty .22 shells off a log without hitting the log at a dozen paces.

The one time he had to defend his family, the woodsman in his hand did just fine, although it took three rounds to stop the threat.

When dad passed on, the Colt stayed in the family.

i have a few coworkers that only have 1 gun each

LLamas .32acp 1911 (and getting a Glock 37 soon)
Beretta 92 inox ( also thinking in getting a Glock)
Taurus 24-7 ( or Taurus 9mm, as the old man call it)

I only know of one person... he inherited a .30-30 Winchester 94, he never bothered to pick it up! It's still at his parents house! Madness!!!!!!

I am racking my brains out on this. I don't know anyone that has only one gun. they either have a couple at least or none at all. Seems most I can think of have the deer rifle and a shotty at the minimum. All my shooting friends have 6 or more that I know of. I agree with the thought that the 2 gun hunters do not as a rule tend to practice much if at all. I have a friend who's father (in his 90's) had a 30-30 that he used to shoot a moose with three years ago. The original (and only) box of ammo that he owned was a box of 20 Winchester shells that were priced a $1.55 from the 40's with three silvertips left in it. I asked him why he hadn't used any more and he replied his 12 GA was cheaper to shoot deer with so he used the rifle just for moose hunts. :D

My boss. He has one pistol that he uses for a nightstand piece. He knows its a ruger bout could not tell me the model or caliber. He has had range safety training and done a home defense course with it, and IMO if he can be safe with it thats all that matters.

Both of my parents own one handgun each. They got them in January 2009...you know why...

They took the self defense courses, both have their ccw. My mom keeps hers in her purse (though she works from home) and my dad keeps his in the closet. My dad was born and raised in New Orleans, and after Katrina he decided he didn't want to be the guy on the block without one.

I got my first shotgun in November. And my second one in December. And my first semi-auto handgun at the beginning of this month. And I have plans for a S&W Airweight in February, lol. Like I need another expensive hobby...

Sure--A lot of non-gun fanatics (unlike myself) that I know either CCW or HD with a single gun. It's quite common but not in gun forums of course.

-Cheers

I own several 44 mag Super Blackhawks. Those are my guns of choice for most things - I just load them accordingly. I own other guns, but those are mostly for other fun stuff. :)

My daughter has laid claim to my Ruger 77/22 MK II so by default she ownes just one of my many. ;) Ya just gotta love kids!

Yes I have known, and known of, many.

Most rarely shoot it if ever.

Like someone else said it tends to get treated like a fire extinguisher. Kept around just in case of the emergency that requires it, but not used until then.

This has included some that carried it.
As well as many individuals who kept one at home for home defense.

It was typically a handgun. Though I do remember some who had only a shotgun or a rimfire rifle, while someone only having a single centerfire rifle and no other gun tends to be rare.

They tend to not enjoy shooting, do not pursue recreational firearm activities, and merely like the availability of the firearm.
Most that actually enjoy recreational firearm use decide they want another one that does something or has some qualities or perceived qualities beyond their first firearm.
I know many recreational shooters with only a couple guns, or a few, but typically not just a single one.
People with just one typically don't like guns or shooting, but do like having the available weapon.

I know a few including my dad who only owns a S&W 442 and my best friend who owns a Taurus PT92. I keep trying to convince them to add a pump shotgun but it hasn't worked yet.

When I was 9 years old I only owned one gun a single shot 28 gunge shotgun (I look at it today and can't believe my dad let me hunt and shoot that antique). I own one or two others now.

My father had one gun. A Remington pump, he hunted with it every year. My brother and me would walk with him while he hunted we were too small to hunt ourselves. Then he picked up a .410 we would take turns going out with. When we got bigger he borrowed a 16 gauge side by side from my grandfather and that was the only gun my grandfather owned but was too old to go out walking anymore. My brother started carrying the pump as my father slowed down on hunting and I kept using the double. But he was pretty good with that pump and was Marine trained with a rifle for the Korean war. He died a few years ago. Those days walking and hunting with my dad are some of my most precious memories.

On another note there a lot of new gun owners now. They probably own a pocket pistol.

I currently own only one gun. A WASR-10. But I am looking at getting a pistol, probably a Glock, and a bolt action rifle.
