I guess this is an old subject but I would like to hear anyones comments. What a dreadfull thought to only own a few guns but here is a short list of my favorites. Rem 870, Ruger 10/22, Marlin 336, Bushmaster AR-15 A1E, Colt 1991-A1, Kahr K40, Ruger MK2, S&W M686+, Ruger SP101, S&W M60. If I could only own a few these would fit all of my requirements.

I'll challenge myself. If I could only own 2 - yep, count em - 2, I'd take the following in order of preference:

1) Rem 870P

2) Kahr K9 (sorry, that specific pistol is not on your list, but the brand is, & it's what i've got :) )

Those two I can carry comfortably with a bug out backpack of 45#, and still make good time into the high country on foot.

With the 870, I've got: A) #1 buck that will stop virtually any aggressor wishing to take my life; B) slugs for larger game; C) bird shot for smaller game. It offers both food & superior protection. Nothing this side of .50 stops like a 12 ga.

With the K9, I've got short range (<20 yd) CCW protection with which I can comfortably produce 6" groups of 124 gr. projectiles at 7 yds.

Then, if I can just find water, stay warm & dry, then I'm good to go.

If I've got transportation beyond my feet & a backpack (somewhere between a BOB bike trailer & a pickup), I'll also take a rifle, but can't say yet which one. (My last one was a Rem .35 lever action, which i totally loved. So sorry I let it go.)

Of course, those ARs ARe sexy...

I could just never understand the purpose of these threads. What if I only had one leg? Well, I guess I'd hop around on my one leg! :D

I think Hank Williams Jr. pretty well summed up the amswer to this question,,,
A shotgun, a rifle and a .45 will pretty well get you by.

If I could only keep a few 3-4 It would have to be
.410 shotgun gift from my now deceased father. (my first gun)
10/22 Ruger (first rifle)
S&W 5903 (first handgun) and
S&W 629 (first anniversary present)
Just way to much sentimental value to give any of these up. Guess its a girl thing. :p

Note that the original poster lists ten guns in his list of what he'd keep to meet his requirements. You guys are being harder on yourselves and this choice than you need to be.

I'll have to pick up several weapons to get up to a few.

Just the one. Browning Hi-Power. I don't hunt. It'll be my carry piece. And come the revolution  it'll be enough to upgrade me to whatever govt agent/aliens/invaders are carrying.

I've actually given that some thought recently - how many do I really want? In all honesty, a lot of my guns rarely get used. They've become possessions.

I think if I had to, I could get by with 6-8 handguns and 2-3 long guns, and be relatively happy. Getting there would involve a lot of liquidating. ;)

I own N number of guns. Where N equals the number of firearms that I can purchase while still meeting all my bills, purchase groceries, buy gas for the jeep, and clothe myself.

Now shame on all of you for making me remember algebra!

Not too hard, the ones I already have and a little more;
FiveseveN Tactical + CZ75B : pistols
G36K/AG36 + MSG90A1 : rifles
Maybe a shotgun (pistol gripped) also.

All I could carry (2 pistols and 2 rifles and some ammo)

When I think of limits on guns I can own, I always revert back to my SHTF wish list...

Primary choice handgun - Easy, a DA 357 revolver. Preferably a Ruger GP100. With the .357 you have your choice of ammo in .357, 38 spc, 38 S&W, 38 Short, and a couple of foreign-born rimmed .38 derivatives that will all function. In a pinch you can also use any .38 or 9mm cal semi-auto variation by using half-moon clips or, in a worst-case scanario, wrapping a small piece of wire in the extractor groove.

Long gun? A break-open single-shot OU shotty/rifle combo chambered in 12-guage and either .308 or 7.62x39. Ammo is plentiful, cheap, and suitably diverse enough to cover pretty much every conceivable defense or hunting condition.

12 Gauge Autoloader
Uzi 9mm
.45 Long slide
Phased plasma rifle in the 40 watt range.

Nothing clean. Right.

For me some favorites are:

-A small framed snub (currently I have a Taurus 85CH only, if I could only have one in this catagory I'd want a lightweight version). Good, reliable, carriable firearm. The lightweight versions (which I should have at least one in one of my next few purchases) are even better at their main mission (carry).

-My Marlin 60 (my first firearm)

-My Taurus PT140 Milennium Pro. A nice carry sized auto that is substantial enough for comfortable and accurate range work.

-A 1911. I have a Charles Daly, but if I could have only a limited number of guns I'd only have one 1911 and I'd probably make it a Dan Wesson or a Kimber Pro Carry II funded by the sales of the guns I had to get rid of.

-My CZ 75B.

-My S&W 57

-My S&W 65LS

-A .22lr handgun. Mine is a Ruger MkII, though there are plenty of good options.

-A lever rifle. I love both my Winchester 94 in 30-30 and my Win 94 in .45LC, but if I was limited I'd probably only keep one. Probably I'd keep the .45LC (or replace both with a Win 94 or Marlin 1894 in .357mag) since the revolver caliber chambering makes it useful for home defense as well as range use (I'm not a hunter but either chambering would work at short distances for deer hunting as well).

If the limits were short enough I couldn't keep all of these it would be a tough choice. Definately at least one auto and one revolver would have to stay regardless of the other choices. I'd keep the lever rifle over the Marlin 60 if I had to. I'd take the 1911 over the CZ 75B. I would probably cut the Taurus PT 140 for the snub or the snub for the Taurus PT140 (which I'd cut would depend upon my mood when I had to make the cut- though it is hard enough a choice I don't know what I'd do). I'm not sure where else I'd cut if I had to.

WHAT?! Why not get the Kahr K2 Krutch.

... and now you have two legs ... :D

You might want a back up crutch too, incase this one gets stuck in chewing gum or somethin'.

Gotta cover all your basics...

10/22 - plinker, varmants, emergency hunting, teaching new shooters, etc.

Glock 23 - CCW, sidearm, home defense, plinking.

AK or SKS - Russian, Yugo or Chinese SKS. Preferably sporterized. Wasr10, MAK-90, Siga, or VEPR in 7.62x39mm. I'll take one of these over an AR because they need less maintinance, can take more abuse, and fire the cheapest(for a normal sized rifle)/most common round in the world.

Rem 700 - Big game, targets, etc. Don't care if it's .308 or 30-06.

Rem 870 - Best gun ever. 100% reliable, 100% versitile.

If I had unlimited funds and could own "N" guns, the "N" that I would choose would be at least 5 of every one ever produced anywhere in the world. :)

When the SHTF in a major way, given a choice of the firearms I currently own, I'd choose to grab the...

.30-06 M1 Garand (hunting, long-range engagment)
7.62x39 AK-47 (durable, mid-range)
12ga Mossberg 500 (hunting, close encounters)
.40 Taurus PT24/7 and/or 9mm Taurus PT92AF
.44 S&W M29 (if there's time to grab it too)

Ideally (money no object), I would replace the Taurus pistols with a .45 HK USP.

If/when the SHTF and everything is FUBAR, I'll take whatever ones I can get that I've got ammo for.

I tend to agree that this type of thread is sort of boring, but it is interesting to read other folks thoughts on the subject;

If I had to grab a backpack full of ammo, a pistol and a long gun and head for the hills, a 9mm glock and a VEPR, me thinks.

If I have a trunk to fill, I'd still want the glock (19 probably, 26 if I can...) and VEPR, my Remington 700 in .243 for longer range and an SKS for back up...

If this is a "Gov't cracks down on firearms possesion" type deal, again I'd want the glock(s) and VEPR, as well as my .22s (Marlin 25 and ruger 22/45), since I can't think of a scenario where .22LR would ever get expensive... [BTW- isnt this scenario what paper-free purchases (used, ftf, etc), air/water tight containers, and shovels are for? ;) ]

Only two?? That's tough. Three, no problem, a rifle, shotgun, and pistol. Only two? Well, since I'm an avid deer hunter and rifleman at heart, so, the .270 BDL of course. Then it's between the 870 and the 1911. I'd probably have to take the 870 second, as I couldn't give up my bird hunting, and it'd work just fine for home defense. I would give up the AK, the SKS's, the Mosins, the 30-30, the .22 rifle, the Kel-Tec, all long before I'd give up the .270. That would be the last one to ever ever go. But back to reality--none of them are going anywhere.
