For me, m&p 9mm full size.

Same answer as last time, my carry. I primarily own a hand gun to carry it. I will not be without a carry gun, I'd feel naked.

Only one handgun should not be mainly for self defense. If you want a weapon solely for self defense I think a shotgun or rifle is a much better choice. I believe that some sort of .22 is the best for 1 handgun situation as it can be very versatile.

Having said that to answer your question... I would say a .357 revolver, either S&W 686 or Ruger 101. Because the .357 in my book is about the perfect man stopper, it can also chamber and shoot the smaller .38 for practice or other needs, it's simple and rugged not to mention good looks.

I don't.
People tend to look at you funny when you walk around all day with a shotgun slung across your chest.

Depends on your part of the woods... not too unusual in these parts. Didn't state that it was for carry either though. A big handgun usually ends up finding itself off your person just as much as a long gun. Not trying to be a smart ass just pointing out facts...

If it is mainly for carry make sure it's something that you will carry. Remember the best defensive firearm is the one you have with you when in need of one. My favorite carry weapons are small J frame revolvers as I like to carry in jacket pocket or about 2 o'clock iwb/owb and the J frame as a short barrel so I can move comfortably, also it can be fire from within the jacket pocket.

Yeah, but this:
mainly for defensive use
to me, means it has to be something I carry with me. I never know where or when I'll need to defend myself. Defensive use, in my book, implies you will have it with you at all times.

I see... Well that doesn't apply to everyone. It's a good practice, but based off some of the answers I don't think everyone understood that completely. A very few people can/will carry a full size handgun day in and day out. So my vote would be for a smaller revolver, I personally favor Smiths J frames but there are plenty of other good options.

Probably a Ruger SR9c.

Small enough to conceal easily and comfortably. Lots of reports of them eating everything reliably. Swap from 10 to 17 round mag for more firepower or open carry, etc.

This can be your EDC, or your SHTF pistol.

mainly for defensive use what would it be
S&W 581 with the following modifications;
Round butt with magnas and a Tyler T grip,
Cut barrel to 3",
Remove underlug just like a model 13,
Gold bead installed on front sight,
Bevel front of cylinder,
Cut cylinder for moonclips,
Bob hammer like a S&W 547,
Wear marks from shooting until I am way to familiar.

or a totally custom Colt Woodsman 1st series with an aluminum frame.
or a Colt LW commander in 9mmx23

It would probably be a 4" Colt Diamondback in 22LR if I could only have ONE. I can always use other guns for home defense. I am more interested in shooting.

I understand the question perfectly, because I have been in that situation of just having one handgun in my possession. I sought out many options, and settled on a Ruger KLCR .357mag/.38spl.. Ruger revolvers are highly dependable, rugged, and competitively priced. The KLCR is great for concealment in any environment, lightweight and accurate even at longer ranges. The .357/.38 is a "one shot stopper" in .357mag., and the .38spl.& +P are also very acceptable carry calibers. Can be used for HD or PD to boot. Just IMHO,perfect!
