I took my Steyr M95 to the range today to burn off some surplus 8 mm ammo. At the 50 yard berm there was a kid hanging a target in the spot where I usually hang mine. The target he was hanging happened to be exactly the same - one of those cheap Scheels paper targets - the red and white ones. He was there with his dad to shoot his .22. Anyway, since he was there first, I hung mine way off to one side. And I then went down to the 100 yard berm to hang another target there. Back at the bench, range goes hot, and I shoot at "my" 50 yard target. Satisfied with where that was hitting, I move on to shoot at my 100 yard target. Next cease fire I clean up my brass and head down to the 50 yard berm to retrieve "my" target. But the kid is there retrieving that target. You guessed it ... I had been shooting at his target at the 50 yard berm. I wonder what he thought of those big bullet holes his rifle had been making?

So ... fess up ... anybody else accidently shoot at someone else's target?

not yet.

Hummmm? A likely story, (heehee) taking advantage of inexperienced youthful shooters. ;) Think you should have given him a brick of .22 for your repentance.

Who shot the tighter group?

That's funny.

Its fairly common in competition. Especially at the longer ranges. I haven't done it but I've had it done to me and I've seen it done lots of times.

Shooting the kids target! Now thats funny!

Never by accident, but I did shoot a friends on purpose. This guy took 4th in state for 3 gun IPSC so anytime your shot against him you shot for 2nd place. We were practicing for a precision match with 22 pistols. Mike was shooting the center out of his target so I pulled a couple up in the right hand corner of his target. When we checked our targets he was beside himself wondering how they got way up there. That is until he counted holes.

Oh ya, happened once at the 50yd range. They had just reworked the lanes and benches and I became a bit disoriented. I started shooting the target hung up by a young husband/wife couple next to me. I pretty quickly realized what happened, apologized, and let them shoot a couple of my rifles at the target Id hung up. They got a kick out of my Garand, then I gave them a couple of zombie targets Id made up for the next round.

Everybody left happy. No harm done.

There have been occasions when we lose track of who's turn it is while shooting trap. A couple of us will say pull at the same time, shoot at the same time, and poof! the target disappears. Then we start counting ammo to figure out who's turn it really is. There is a lot of good natured ribbing that goes on in the next round.

i’ve done this. After the confusion died down it was clear that I was the one in error. Mea culpa, please have my next target.

Not accidentally. But I've done it purposely, sometimes to bolster someone's ego, sometimes to deflate it.
When I was a 4-H rifle leader, the kids would shoot each others' targets all the time. Made scoring a challenge.

Yup, BTDT.

not yet but i have been memorably accused twice. once by a relatively newby but smug looking kid( 20's) who accused me of shooting his target when we were both shooting at 10 yds. unbelievable. I asked him to look at my targets to see what the group sizes were and that i could not be that bad a shot to go into his lane.

the other was "more memorable". i was shooting gongs at 225 yds with my M1A. we can shoot whatever gong is there even across lanes. a guy sets up at 200 yrd line with his paper target but there must have been a foot or two where my bullet will pass close to his target. i continue shooting the gong with iron sights. the guy comes over to me shouting "F@%$ you man you're shooting my target". the range officer has to intervene. he shows us his target which has a irregular horizontal hole on the lower part of the paper far from his actual printed target. i told him one, if i wanted to shoot your target. i wouldn't miss the actual target that far and 2 my bullets are not going to keyhole at 200 yrds. i was shooting a 168 gr BTHP recently chronoed then at around 2650 fps. i also told him if i could see it i should be able to hit my own target. to shut the guy up and defuse the situation i still apologize and continue to shoot. still keeps F ing me and the range officer has to tell him "what else do you want he apologized already even if he doesnt think he shot your target". before he left he apologized as he apparently watched me behind my back as i continued to shoot the same gong. the irregular hole was likely was splashback from the pockmarked gongs. maybe from me maybe from other people shooting the gong but that is a non issue that anybody that sets up at 200 yds can complain about.

Way back in the mid 60s, I was taking rifle range under our summer recreation program. I never unintentionally hit someone else's target. But I did become known for placing an 11th hole in another target, as well as for shooting 3 of the 4 clothespins of another target. The instructor, a good friend, one day said I needed to start buying clothespins. When I showed up with a bag, he was floored. :D
