Dulvarian brought up something I had mentioned earlier. There are ways to spot people who are carrying a concealed weapon. Not all of them, but a fairly high number. It's relatively easy to conceal a weapon so that a person who isn't looking for it won't notice it's there. Most people don't carry a gun, so the average person isn't looking for one. But there are people who are looking for them.
Suzukisam brought up a very valid point: we do have weapons other than guns we can use to deter or even disarm an attack. One of those super-bright tactical lights designed to be attached to a picatinny rail can be very useful in your hand and no one will think twice about your carrying it at night.
