Open Carry - What do you choose?

Ya'll really see the need to openly pack a gun around with you on your hip all the time?

Ever since I lost my whistle and pepper spray. On second thought, you may be right. I've never had a fire and still keep that extinguisher in the kitchen to displace the decor. Probably tin foil of me to do so as I've never had a fire. It's been years since I've had a flat tire and I don't plan on having one, better pull the spare off the truck.

I'd just continue to carry the same way as usual, semi concealed.

I'd still CC most of the time, but for those ocassions when OC was appropriate, a military pistol belt rig is hard to beat.

Personally, I think concealed carry is one of the biggest threats to gun owners yet. And the more states that adopt it the worse things will be for all of us. I've heard all the arguments about why carry concealed, but IMHO, they don't begin to outweigh the harm that we are doing to ourselves.

My state - Colorado - just this year passed a very strong pre-emption law which explicitly made open carry legal unless posted.

When I've carried openly, it was my 1911.

I tend to agree with the idea that carring concealed makes it harder for the wolves to tell the sheep from the wolfhounds. At one time however I carried openly on a regular basis. Now, I would only carry openly if I were packing something to big to easily conceal, or if I were out in the boonies.

A few months back I was out shooting with some friends and was wearing my S&W 27 openly in a black nylon holster. We stopped for coffee at our regular hang out and I never bothered to take off the big revolver. Nobody seemed to even notice. But that's in Albuquerque.

Sounds like the original concept of concealed carry is well rooted these days. It was to allow those who wanted to carry the opportunity to do so while appeasing the fears of those who are opposed against handguns. We are suppose to hide excersising our right because someone else may be upset or fearful of what we are doing.
If armed crimes dropped when conceal carry became more prevalent, then shouldn't they drop even further as many more display means to defend themselves? Staying concealed only shows you as one of the unarmed who would be chosen for the attack. Of course this concept would only work if all carried openly to show the force of the masses.

Well, my primary CCW is a Kahr P9 Covert. If I could open carry, it would probably be a Kahr TP9.

Of course, I'd have to take a 1911 out just to say I did. ;)

And maybe the 45 Blackhawn when I went to the BBQ. :p

While open carry is legal here, if I'm carrying openly its in a flap-style holster to keep rain/snow/dirt etc off my handgun. I'm probably carrying a rifle or shotgun in my hands at the same time.

Open carry is an invitation to be shot in the Detroit area by LEOs. With that said I would opt for an Alessi DOJ and a Kramer Flap Holster for a 1911A1 Government Model. Regards, Richard:D

Open carry is allowed in my state. I rarely see anyone carrying open with the exception of the occasional six shooter during hunting season. Fact is, most folks equate open carry with an "attitude".

I would carry the same thing as I do now: Colt 1991A1 NRM Government Model. On rare occasions, I open carry. Generally this is when I'm driving from A to B or if I'm headed to the range.

I would not open carry unless I am in the woods. Then its my 5 shot Ruger Redhawk Hamilton Bowen conversion. Why give away your hand.

I do carry open. In my state (MO) that's the only way right now. I live in a rural town and carry my 92FS almost everywhere except the post office. Don't carry in the bank for courtesy reasons. Everywhere else the only one that ever says anything is my barber, who it just interested in the gun I am carrying that day. 99% of the time it will be the Beretta. Most people who know me expect it. They have a sidebet going as to what place I will be in line for the CCW permits (already have my class) when the ridiculous lawsuit is thrown out in January. Just like the world series, I will camp out in front of the sheriff's office early on permit-morning.:D

Although legal in CO, I've only ever seen it in the woods. If it was more common, and hence less likely to lead to 911 calls, I would choose to open carry ocassionally, mainly when taking the dog for long walks on cold winter days, because it's difficult to maintain the proper balance between concealment, accessibility, and warmth when the gun is under a big parka.

Open carry is already legal here in the vast Sonoran desert, so your point is moot for me.
My wife, however, is a different story.
She insists that I carry concealed as not to advertise to the "hood" that we have guns in the house!! Frankly, she has a point!!

You know, I see a lot of people saying, "If open carry was more accepted...". Folks, if you want it to be more accepted, there's a simple way to do it. OPEN CARRY! If the sheeple bleat, let them bleat. If the law is called, handle it politely and professionally. This is the only way it's going to be more accepted.

As a couple of people have posted, most of the sheep won't notice, or will assume you're a cop. As for the rest...so what?

There is other problems with open carry than simply perception. The reason cops wear security holsters is because of gun grabs. If you open carry you will have the same problem not only the sheeply will know you have a gun and where it is the criminals will too. Not all will be detered by the mear fact you have a gun.

Also a person who carries openly in my experience has issues. Most of the ones I have met are a bit crazy anti govt types. I would not want to be associated with that image. Carry concealed and be discreet.

Not sure how to reply to that Pat, except to say that that kind of attitude is what the sheeple want us to have. Most of the people I've known who open carry just believe in the 2nd Amendment.
