I'm planning on moving.

What state has open carry?

Not that I always want to carry openly I would just like the option.

I am looking for a state that has both open and concealed carry.

Also I don't know how open carry works.

For example, does a CCP in one of the open carry states permit you to carry openly or do you have to get a second open carry permit?

Depending on the answer to the previous question: If I get one permit do you have to get the other, or does an open carry permit include concealed carry?

Thanks, in advance,
Mark

Well, let's start with http://www.opencarry.org/ and work from there.

Map of states with open carry information here: http://www.opencarry.org/opencarry.html

List of "gold star" states from that map page:
  • Alaska
  • Arizona
  • Idaho
  • Kentucky
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New Mexico
  • South Dakota
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • Wyoming

The "Licensed Open Carry" states on that map are a weird mixture of gun-friendly and gun-hostile states. I mean, really, New Jersey, seriously?

If it matters to you who your neighbors are, then have a look at the cluster of states with Utah or Wyoming in the middle.

All other things being equal, I'd be inclined -- based on the color of the bounding states -- to choose one of these states, without any particular preferential order:
  • Idaho
  • Montana
  • Wyoming
  • Utah
  • Colorado

In all fairness, I have to say that I chose to live in Idaho, based largely on 1) the state's gun laws, and 2) its neighbors.

Nevada isn't bad, but a) Las Vegas (Clark County) is kinda an island of Los Angeles wannabe, and b) it has a very long border with California. Living in Northern Nevada (or Western Nevada, as it's often called -- Reno is west of L.A.) isn't bad. I liked it there, for the most part. I just liked Idaho/Montana better.

Arizona has some risks resulting from its southern border situation, making Phoenix and Tucson kinda "iffy." I'd be inclined to look at Flagstaff or Prescott (hey, they're cooler, too).

Wyoming and Montana made my "top three" list, but it turned out that Idaho provided me with access to work before WY and MT did.

You might want to scroll down to the thread: I'm coming around on open carry, by ezypikns.

ArfinGreebly, this is the best site. Any question I have about guns or gun laws get answered quickly and easily.

If only the DMV worked this way. I looked around at that site, I might be joining you in Idaho, I like Montana as well.
