If it DID happen every day ... multiple times .... then perhaps the recipient of a 911 call might eventually just ask ... ''And is there any threat or just someone carrying a gun''?? ..... because the cops would be tired sick of being called out to non threat carry reports, and be able to get on with real work.

I like the way you think....

I voted "Undecided" cuz I can see some good, and
what most folk's would consider evil coming
from it! :uhoh: :( :D Some people who wouldn't
know any better, would think you were trying to
show off; or what I call "grand standing"!

P95 you have a valid point.
Around here though, the city council would be quick to pass an ordinance against it.

If open carry was legal, and people did it, it would become less of a big deal. The reason it scares people is because of the "blood flowing in the streets" naysayers. People that live in CCW areas still think that if people carried guns then blood would flow freely. They think this because they don't realize that the people in front and in back of them in line at McDonalds were toting. If they could see the guns, and know how many people carried them without incident, there would be less fear of it.

Tech ... 110% true. Trouble is .. these days .... implementing it without the hassle that we might expect.

The ''carry vacuum'' is regretably maybe too long standing now to be able to reverse things ... I can dream tho.

It is legal here in NV, and in 95% of the state it may be ok but I wouldn't do it in Vegas. Too many people here would freak, although I'd worry less about that than the fact that this place also has more bad guys than anywhere else in NV. I don't want them to know I have a gun.

 Open carry is legal in my home state. Still I, almost, never do it because I refuse to: scare, 'soccer moms', 'naive high school students, most Democrats, married police officers, (Who would have to confront a BS, 'man w/ gun' call.) and - importantly - I'm not willing to give up my edge if it ever comes down to a, ‘quick-draw 'n fire' situation.

I DO NOT want to be the first guy, 'taken out' when the bad guys come through the door, shooting! If a BG sees that I'm armed, then, he's going to apply a different tactic; and I'll either be promptly shot, or snuck up on from behind, and whacked over the head in order to neutralize my gun. I won't, even, admit at gun shows that I'm carrying. As far as I'm concerned it nobody's business except my own. ;)

i have been pondering this as well considering open carry is technically legal here in ohio.

I'll only consider open carry where allowed when concealed is prohibited.

This was my thought exactly. the only signs i have seen prohibited concealed carry, and not firearms as a whole. So i have been contemplating as to wether i would open carry in those establishments as i explained to them why i would no longer be spending my money there. i am still undecided on the whole idea.

I've replied to these threads before, and I say the same thing. If the sheep get scared, let them baaa. WildAlaska, no offence, but it's gun owners like you who cause all gun owners a lot of problems, if we'd quit fighting amongst ourselves, and stand up against the sheeple, we wouldn't have so many unconstitutional laws.

Do you really think that someone open carrying, especially in Alaska, is looking for trouble? I open carry, not as often as I'd like, but whenever I can, on the premise that the more people see a normal person carrying a gun, the more they will see it as normal.

I don't think I'd open carry very much, merely because I don't want to open carry using a open-top holster with minimal retention. I do have a OWB Safariland w/SLS that I specifically use for open carry, but it's not near as comfortable to wear as an IWB Kydex holster. So, I'd probably just continue to CCW the vast majority of the time. As for whether I would care what other people would think: I could care less what they think.

TechBrute on Open carry:
Yeah, I didn't want to get into the complications of implementing it.

Actually implementation of open carry would be exceptionally easy if one could get one's state legislature and governor behind it (and therein lies the rub):

1) Pass state pre-emption whereby the state laws automatically pre-empt and negate any law or ordinance passed by a lower level government entity. Oklahoma has it and it works - counties and cities can't do a thing in any area (gun related) that the state has already legislated on. NOTE: OK does not have open carry - big no-no here.

2) Legislature passes a law making Open Carry legal (with what ever restrictions they think reasonable - maybe one must get licensed just like for a CCW).

3) Make it known thru written communication to all state LE agencies that Open Carry is legal and that citizens exercising that priviledge (I hate that but in today's environment that is what it would be) is prohibited and will be dealt with as a violation of civil rights and punished accordingly.

4) Produce some public service messages and put them on the air informing the public that open carry is now legal.

The biggest problem is getting the state legislature to buy into it. For those states where open carry is already legal and pre-emption exists just jump right to step 4.

if one could get one's state legislature and governor behind it
As our Governess was putting her poison veto pen to the CCW bill last month, she made the remark that "Kansas already allows for open carry" assuming that people aren't willing to do that.
Open carry is also subject to local ordinance so it would be a moot point in most cities anyway.
I feel the need to write her a letter asking for a document I could carry that gives me her blessings to carry openly that I could show to any LEO that shows up to "Question my intentions".

Well, I'm in no hurry to go out and add my name to a list for a card that says I can wear a jacket over it. I'd probably open carry.

I don't care who gets freaked out. It's a right, damnit. People can freak other people out with their right freedom of speech, I'll freak them out with my right to defense.

Where's the option for "I think open carry is a good thing in that it gets the average person more used to being around people carrying guns safely, yet I'm too chicken to do it myself for fear of how the police in my area might react".

Open carry is legal where I live. I would consider joining a group for an open carry walk, especially if law enforcement is notified in advance so some inexperienced cop doesn't freak out seeing someone with a gun that's not wearing a police uniform.

I'm much less likely to take a stroll around my neighborhood carrying openly.

Carrying openly scares people because they aren't used to seeing people do it.

The only way to fix that is to carry openly and help people get used to it.

However, doing so needs to be done carefully so that we don't motivate too many people who are irrationally scared by seeing people with guns into becomming active in the anti-gun movement.

flatrock hit the nail on the head. If we started doing this in large groups then it would be viewed as more socially acceptable than if a single person were to do it. If we do this in groups long enough, (I'm guessing a years worth of weekends) a single person carrying open would hardly raise an eyebrow and further the pro-gun cause immensely. And to put my money where my mouth is, if there is anyone around Purdue that would like to organize such a day I'm in.

Plus the media tripe that's put out.
Media only affects people's view of the unknown. If the media starts a campain that all cars only go 30K miles prior to exploding into a giant ball of flame, very few people will lend any credibility to it. These people mostly likely will not have had a car with more than 30K miles.

My uneloquent point is that you rely on the media for information that you can't gather yourself.

Open carry is, at least in theory, legal in Minnesota, if you have a carry permit.

The problem is that we're still in the new days of the carry law, and it's uncommon, at least at present, and therefore likely to shock/scare some nervous people. It's also likely to remind some of the garboons that they're not the only ones who are armed.

So: yes. While I think that concealed carry makes the most sense, I do think that occasional open carry, under very carefully thought out circumstances also does.

Open carry is "sortof" legal already in NC...

We do have a "blue" law that is called "going armed to the terror of the people"...You can get nailed with that...One of the few times I have ever gotten into a shouting match with an LEO was over this law...

My home and shop are in the country...I could prolly ride around on my 4-wheeler naked carrying a Streetsweeper and noone would notice...I do openly carry on my property when I am doing yard work etc...

BTW..I highly doubt that WildAlaska is causing alot of gunowners problems...only problem he is causing me is, me lusting after one of those "CO-PILOT" rifles he sells..lol

How's this for weird...

Virginia has shall-issue concealed carry BUT a permit-holder may not bring a concealed firearm into a restaurant that serves alcohol. (Criminals, of course, are exempt.)

OTOH, open carry is perfectly legal in those same restaurants. Go figure.

So yes, there are times in northern VA when I carry openly, and I've noticed that I'm not the only one to do so. Leaving the gun in my car doesn't do me any good when I'm walking through the restaurant's parking lot.

Living in Northern Virginia, I can. Sometimes I do. Rarely as a point of specific intent, and more often because I'm carrying in the summertime, and I don't want to put a jacket on.

I only ever had trouble once (original thread), and that was in a place (restaurant) where I had to carry openly, if I wanted to carry at all... Once, at a different restaurant, a group of customers complained to the management that four of us were carrying <gasp>guns!</gasp> The waiter asked if they'd like to speak to the manager about it, and then went to fetch the manager. The manager came to talk to them, and told them that (a) we were perfectly legal, and (b) they were free to leave his establishment if they chose. :D

In any case, most people are so far into Condition White that they likely never notice I'm carrying at all. Black clothes and a black Beretta probably help in that regard.

If people are so ignorant and bigoted as to get all upset over it, that's fine. I will not curtail my legal activities simply to cater to someone's ill-founded phobias.
