Open Carry......

I am not a fan of open carry but...

that does not mean that I am against it, it just isn't for me. I have carried openly on a few occasions in the past, with less than desireable results each time. I recently attended an open carry rally and even there I carried concealed till I felt comfortable. I really only attended for two reasons. The first of which is that I believe in the right to OC. The second is that the young man putting on the rally is a friend of my daughters, and I wished to show my support.

well, color me ambivalent, partly because a Georgia Firearms License allows both/either and/or knives of your choice, no passion required

both sides all have legitimate perspectives on this FAQ topic
if you live where I do, it's a personal choice, and there is no wrong choice
"thou shalt" makes no more sense than "thou shalt not", no need to get mean spirited about it
if feel the need to make a statement, well, do that, it's still (mostly) a free country

there are restrictions here as to where ye shalt not (carry either or any), and even though mostly "oughta' not be a law", it is what it is, and not that complicated
you only need read the rules once, no lawyer required, common sense (like it or not), a little dab will do ya' -
not in school zones, nor churches. nor gub'mt buildings, nor bars, nor "public gatherings"
if in doubt leave it out (or secured in vehicle)

if ye must march in protest, have a good lawyer and/or a "get out of jail free card" handy
act like an obnoxious problem child, somebody or other will likely try to knock you in the noggin' with a law club, and lawyers will get paid, win lose or draw

me, I carry CCW, but not obsessive compulsive about it; I don't get real worried about whether or not I "print", I am like as not to stick a handgun in my back pocket as not (unloaded) carrying gear to/from.. but not much inclined to whip out and wave around the one tucked IWB, whether it show or no

mostly I already stand out in a crowd by merit of being old, fat, ugly, and a sloppy dresser...tattoos and/or 44 mag on hip not required

which is mostly why I don't OC, I suppose
although law allows, I don't believe I have noticed but maybe 3 or 4 total joe-average-citizens OC around here in the last 10 or 15 years, if that
(I dunno, I guess maybe tats and t-shirts are "statement" enough)
if even one in 50 people you see on the street here did, maybe I would, if it happened to be somehow or other a simple matter of personal convenience

but it being how it is, I do think OC here would make some decent honest citizens "uncomfortable".. not because they are a bunch of anti-gun nut cases, nor paranoid, but simply because people notice "stands out", and are naturally prone to wonder why, even if they themselves are firearms owners
truth is, I would take notice, not quake in fear nor go into my fast draw, but wonder a bit, and just mebbe keep a casual eye on the guy
that's just what goes with being a "stand out", demographic environment does matter

last people I did see here with gun on hip were a gun shop owner and a liquor store owner, struck me as not a bad notion, even though I would have opted for CCW or a double 12 ga under the counter myself
but behind liquor store or gun shop counter ain't the same as a window shopping on main street
depending on where your main street is, I suppose

That is so sad. You are saying the right to OC is there in Georgia but virtually no one uses it! What's behind that? Is OC so recent that no one wants to be the first? If not that, then what? I hope there is no element of shame in being a gun owner or a person who carries a gun.

duns,
have no fear, no shortage of guns here, no shortage of gun owners, no shortage of gun owner pride... but no shame
(was a shortage of ammo for a while, somebody must have been buying it up, I know i didn't get it all)
no shortage of bumper stickers, t-shirts, caps, flags (both Union and Confederate), bibles, the NRA is alive and well (and so is the tea party), etc., etc., etc.
carry permits easy as falling out of your chair to get and/or renew every 5 years, no shortage of those either, $55 a pop last go around

shortage of fear, maybe, I dunno...
no shortage of illegal immigrants, either, but it ain't a war zone, it ain't underground Atlanta or downtown Detroit, it ain't Arizona, nor the south Texas border
it's just deep south Georgia, you know, "real" America
"Thou Shalt/shalt not" still works pretty well in church, and in court, but not always so well on the street.. I mostly don't ask 'em why they do or don't CCW and/or OC, 'cause it mostly ain't none of my business and they mostly don't ask me
(sort of like way-back-when)

I reckon they mostly just don't feel the need
freedom, free choice, go figger

be sad if ye must, but they/we ain't
we do get a tad angry every now and then, but not sad

PS
no, permit to CCW/OC is anything but new around here, but a lot of folks still don't bother, that doesn't mean they are are defenseless
there never was, that I know of, any law against a handgun in vehicle (even in open view inside your own vehicle), either, no permit required

PPS
actually it reminds me a whole lot of Cleburne, Texas 32 years ago
gun racks in pickup trucks not as common as used to be (windows can too easy be broken), bad things sometimes do happen, even to good people every now and then, but most people still think shooting people is a bad thing.... unless they really, really, really need shooting
it ain't heaven, it's just America

I'm with OldFool in this one.

I may not be old and fat, but I am a bit of a sloppy dresser and my tats don't endear me to people and as such, they're hardly surprised when there's a little lump on my hip or a little barrel sticking out. ... The whole *Army* thing helps, too, so I really have the luxury of not having to be paranoid.
OC is all fine and dandy, but I do think it cramps a lot of people's style, if you will. I mean, not everyone wears hats. Just because we're all free to wear a Fez doesn't mean a fez suits everyone.

If it is legal, and it should be everywhere along with carrying concealed, I have no problem open carrying or others that do. If you look/act like a victim, you are likely to end up as one, open carry or no. Someone else's opinion, is just that and they are entitled to it, but it generally doesn't affect my choices any more than I would expect my opinions to affect their choices.

My opinion on OC (Coming from a Californian) is that one of the only ways to get the general public to accept the exercise of a right is simply by exercising that right in a public manner. If I go about my daily life with concealed pistol, people around me won't even be thinking about guns, but if I OC, people will think of them. I think that's why many people say that OC is used to spread information about our rights. Just as any other right, which is going to make people aware of that right: making sure nobody sees you exercising it, or publicly exercising it?
And as far as different types of people OC'ing, people aren't all the same. We dress, talk, act, believe differently. Some have long hair, some short hair. Some have tattoos, some don't. If you can legally do so, I really don't see any reason to not carry because you look different than "the average Joe". We want people to accept the exercise of rights regardless of what you look like, not just for stereotypes or certain segments of society.

OC'd today. Went up the mountain to get a load of wood and stuck a snubby .38 on my hip. But the most looks I got was for the cammoed out 12ga 870 HD in a custom rack on the roll bar of my CJ5 Jeep.

I dunno, if I did decide to actually open carry I would make sure to have a gun that well ... suits me. I'd consider a gun in a "perfectly legal" society" similar to a nice watch.
Stylish if you got a nice one to match you.
