I recently picked up a 20" RRA A4 upper from an estate sale and now I'm looking for some glass. The rifle will probably spend most of its time punching paper out to 300 yards with an occasional woodchuck hunt at a buddies parents dairy farm.

While thumbing through November flyer and I noticed the Weaver Grand Slam Tactical 3-10x40 with MIL/MIL adjustment for ~$300. When I went to Midways website I found the Weaver Kaspa Tactical Rifle Scope 30mm Tube 3-12x 44mm Side Focus for ~$230. Here is the link http://www.midwayusa.com/Product/55...s-illuminated-ballistic-mil-dot-reticle-matte There are no reviews of this scope and was wondering if anyone can give me some feedback on it.

hummm....looked through the weaver many times but was not to impressed. Look into the nikon buck master series. They are as good as it gets for the money IMO. Good reticles and great optics for the money.

Leupold first, Nikon second and only for me. Pick the line within your budget and you won't be sorry.

A good friend of mine, that owns a sporting goods store, and is a FFL dealer. He carries all of the major brands of scopes. Out of all of them he said the only scope he will use is the Swift. It is just as good if not better then most of them including Leupold. Half the price and just as good. I now own 4 Leupolds and 6 Swifts and happy with them.

Strickly Leupold glass for me! I have some of their glass that is better than 30 yrs. old and they never loose zero or leak, EVER! They also offer light filter's that thread into the objective. For those that need this feature, it's a high quality accessory.

I'd get as much power as I could afford from a name brand manufacturer. A 4.5x14 would be the lowest I would go....prairie doggin' is my game and none of the rifles I take have less than 20x at the top end. Target shooting @ 300 yards is also a good reason for some power.

Just remember a quality scope from a reputable manufacturer of a somewhat lower power will outdo a cheap scope with lots of power more often than not.

wyncollector, if that 3-9X is a mil/mil setup, the both the reticle and turrets are going to be calibrated in mils. With that other model, I'm pretty sure that the reticle is calibrated in mils, but the turrets are MOA. If you are actually going to use the reticle for what it's for, you'll have to do the math to use the mismatched setup. I'd stick to either mil/mil or MOA/MOA. It's just simpler.

You also have to keep in mind that most "tactical" scopes are going to have pretty heavy reticles. For those that shoot at small stuff, this can be a problem.

My only advise is to try to check a scope out first hand before you buy it. It's hard to get a good idea of something you've never seen before from a picture on the internet.

AK_Main_aic. I worked in the sporting good business also, and we carried a full line of Swift for a little while, that is until I happened to notice that their optics displayed some of the worst optic quality I've ever seen.

I was checking in an order form Sports South and while pricing and setting up the optics case I picked up a variable power Swift, and when I turned the power up I heard a very audible hiss and the optic suddenly fogged up. What had happened is the gas seal blew. Additionally, customers who had bought them from us started bringing them back because reticle's were breaking, seals leaking, and generally speaking over all quality was about that of a $30-$40 El Cheapo, they are plain and simple, JUNK!

If I was going to buy junk optics, and I wouldn't, but if I were to, it wouldn't be Swift.

I am so glad I am not stuck on high dollar glass. I do have a few scopes worth well over $1500.00, but for a plinker AR I usually use a cheap and GREAT Tasco Super Varmenter the 2.5~10X mil dot. At under 90 dollars, it is every bit as clear as any scope I have looked thru at five times the price, and I ave had them on 10-22s, AR's and even a budget project SWS I built for under 800 dollars that was a true 1/2moa rifle with this scope!

Thanks for the input folks. I decided to pass on the Weaver Kaspa scope after reading a thread over at the snipershide. It looks like the scope is made in China and not in Japan like other Weaver scopes.

I ended up pulling a Nitrex by Weaver 2-10x50 etched ballistic recticle scope off my Howa Varmint Supreme .308 for the RRA upper. I picked up a SWFA SS 10X42 scope to then put on the Howa.
