Im debating on getting an sks or a gsg-5 for a new toy. If I get the sks I can use it for deer hunting but ammo costs much more. And as a collector I would want to put a dragunov stock and ak mag adapter on it adding to the cost of the weapon. If I go with the gsg-5 ammo is cheap and it wouldnt need any mods, but its only good for plinking and the gun cost is more. Tho thats mostly what I do. Any ideas? The gsg I want is the pistol model that looks like an mp5. Considering a 10/22 as well. But It would also need some modification to fit my tastes. Open to suggestions as well. Keep in mind ammo cost is important as well as a tactical look, and my budget is 500 dollars max. So in a nut shell, my priorities are in this order. 500>, fun to shoot, looks mean<lots of mods, cheap ammo>hunting power, and obviously above all, legal. But here in kansas pretty much anything in my budget is legal. I already have a mossburg 500, and m1 carbine. Thanks for any help.

To fit my personal collection tastes of tactical style weapons. If it looks mean, it adds to the fun of shooting it with friends. Not to mention tactical weapons have a more comfortable feel to them in my opinion.

I've temporarily tried aftermarket stocks on an sks I had. They all felt cheap and/or flimsy...like they should have came with a rail mounted coozy. :) In the end, the original wood was the best to shoot with IMO. I eventually sold one SKS and stuck the other in the back of the safe. It rarely comes out, it just doesn't float my boat. My oldest son seems to like it, and anything else labeled tactical.

I have a taste for tactical style weapons. In my opinion they look cooler and I find them much more comfortable to hold and shoot.

With a 500 budget you could just go with a good AK variant? An sks with ak mags was once an affordable alternative to an ak, but now a high end sks with ak mags costs more than a decent shooting ak

Sorry bout multiple posts. My phone kept saying they didnt send. Ill look at another option than. Or just let that be my cue to get the gsg. Lol. Thanks. Still open to other ideas.

IMHO an AK variant in 7.62x39 or a S&W 15-22 MOE.

With a 5 round mag in place and decent soft points any AK with be up for deer hunting if state laws allow it. The 15-22 with just a decent scope is plenty accurate for squirrels, rabbits and vermin.

By toys I mean man toys. Nothing to be disrespected, abused, or treated carelessly. By toy I mean its for rearictional use. Ill have to do some research on the ak. Always heard sks was the way to go.

They still aren't toys. Firearms can kill at a moment's in attention, even a single shot benchrest rimfire. Do you teach your children firearms are toys?

Something to think about. I'm done with this soapbox

Just my .02, if you get the SKS and start changing its configuration you will have to meet the 922r compliance quota of parts. You'll have to replace a certain number of parts to make it compliant.

If you want to make it stand out from the thousands I'd keep it stock every SKS I've seen was modified in some way.

The GSG-5's aren't very well built guns, I had one and it always had FTF issues regardless of ammo.

Personally if I were looking for a fungun, I wouldn't pick any of your choices except for maybe a russian SKS.

I don't think 922r applies to the SKS, it's an import law and effects weapons being imported into the country, once its here you can add or remove any pieces you wish.

Most try to keep AK's and the like compliant because the were built that way and the ATF could bring you up on charges if you do the alterations, but the SKS's currently being imported are considered sporting rifles or C&R firearms so they are exempt from sect. 922r according to everything I've read.

Cheap (tactical fun)...Mossberg 22 tactical (ar-15 look alike) for under $300. Slap on a cheap red dot or a millet dpms for some good fun. All for under $500 with ammo.

Fun gun, tactical and cheap ammo screams an AK-47 or variant. Other options like a tactical Mini-14, AR-15 or VZ.58 would be more expensive.

Didnt know mossburg made an ar lookalike. That sounds pretty good. All the aks I seem to find are 450 or more plus shipping and ffl ten percent charge puts it a little over my budget. Could maybe squeeze it in, but would be pretty hard. Ill have to do more lookin later.

so can a kiddy pool if someone holds your head under the water long enough, still a toy. plenty of things have the potential to kill, it dosnt add some kind of voodoo magic to the object

922r most certainly applies to the SKS.
