I am wanting to buy a 308 bolt action , right hand. I also want a wood stock but without the rollover cheek piece. Not too sure that I want a Ruger Hawkeye or M77. I don't have $2000. to spend like the fellow that wants the 270. Also do not need a scope. Weatherby would be my choice but the stock has the cheek piece. I have a Weatherby 25-06 that I am going to sell to help pay for this new rifle. I have looked on GunBroker for ideas but no conclusions yet. I will not buy on G/B, I want to handle it before the $$$ are laid out. Comments will be appreciated. Thanks.

Ruger Hawkeye or 77 would be a good choice. Both excellent rifles. I'm a lefty, so I hate the cheek piece myself!

Have you looked at the Brownings? I've always wanted one of those. Around $800, but not sure if they have iron sights.

It can all be summed-up by saying, go to the gun store, and pick up several. Buy the one that feels best at your shoulder...feel like a natural extension of your arm. You may not like what I like, but you will like what feels natural.

Let us know what you decide.

As our ol' buddy Paul Harvey would say, Now for the rest of the story. I have a 35 Rem 336 Marlin and also a 45-70 1895 Marlin both with iron sights these are my "go to guns", but I am a handgunner . My son is right eyed, right handed but shoots a rifle left handed, ?????. He wants a rifle more for Elk, yes the 25-06 will work but since it has a roll over cheek piece he can't use it properly. Soooo, I said lets sell the 25 and get something else, he likes the 308 and so do I. He is strong enough to hold a rifle up to his left shoulder and work the bolt with his right hand and not take the gun from his eye plus I can use it right handed. Does all this make sense ?

There are many, many options for a rifle like that. BTW do you mean you have a scope already or that you don't want to use a scope? Because there aren't a lot of choices that have iron sights these days. Some Rugers have iron sights. Most don't. I like CZ, Tikka, Savage, Howa, T/C, and a few others these days. I've come closer to buying a Remington than most of those other rifles though. Still don't have one except for a shotgun. Remington has had issues in recent years on certain rifles. There are models to avoid too. But finding a good rifle should be easy enough these days. Features and fit mean a lot considering how accurate most rifles are for the most part.

Yes I have a scope, 3X9 Leupold and a Weaver 6.5X20 40/44. Some of the brands of rifles do not have stocks that I want. CZ is good, so is Ruger, Savage, Kimber ($$$$$). There is a couple of gun shops in Albuquerque along with Sportsmans Warehouse and Dick's, not sure I want to spend my money at Dick's. I want new rather than used, don't want to spend $700. on a shot out barrel.
