Like almost everyone else, I cut my teeth on a .22. I do more hunting with a .22, because you can hunt squirrels 7 months out of the year in the Ozarks. I shoot it more than anything else -- it's cheap to shoot. It's an excellent understudy for centerfires. It's a great target and hunting round in its own right.

What's not to like about the .22?

22 mag, thats a good idea, more useful, louder, would be cheap if the market wasnt focused on lr

I'd have to say that the .22 is the most versitile caliber out there. It's a great first gun, it's great for practice, great for just plinking around, is cheap enough to go out every weekend. Has enough variety in ammo for just about any use... whether it be plinking, rodent control, hunting, target practice, match shooting, etc... and is capable of far more than most give it credit for.

Do I own a .22?? nope... I have 4 of 'em... :neener:

None of the poll choices work for me. I love the .22 L.R. I also love my centerfires, but I don't ''prefer'' one over the other; it depends upon the task at hand.

That said, I think every serious handgunner should own at least one .22 handgun, and every serious rifleman should own a .22 rifle.

I will also agree, if I could only pick one single caliber for "everything" it would be 22lr. I could survive with just a .22 Ruger 10/22. I could defend myself and get game to eat... it's my favorite...

If I could only own one rifle, it would be a .308.

That said, I enjoy shooting my Browning BLR-22 more than anything else. It's a piece of perfection.
