I'm on the verge of buying the G2 rifle, but still on a learning curve. I want the Contender G2 over the Encore because it can accomodate both rimfire and centerfire. I initially want it in .223 and 17 Mach2 and am also looking at the 6.8 Remmington for a 3rd barrel (maybe). I'm also hoping there will be future caliber offerings in 30 caliber. Right now they offer 17m2 up to 45-70, but only a 30-30 in 30 cal.

Questions; 1.What can I do with the 6.8 Rem? 2.Do the T/C's have an ejector? 3.What are the +-'s of this gun and arrangement. 4.How quick can I change out barrels? 6. How fast (if need be) can I reload vs. a bolt gun?

I'll use it for plinking, paper, varmints and maybe larger game with the appropriate calibers. I Kinda like the idea of multiple barrels and one frame. The gun is $450ish, extra barrels $250-$280. I would dedicate a scope for each barrel/caliber combination.

I like(d) the idea of the barrel swap was well, until I find the price of the rifle is $450+tax (nearly $80-100 more than a Savage) and the barrels cost more than Douglas XX match barrels...and this still seems to require different scopes on each barrel.

All of a sudden a somewhat crowded gun safe doesn't seem like much of an issue...and I get to share my functional guns with others.

Gbran,

Getting into TC's is a dangerous thing...you will be broke as if you were a C&R holder, trust me. :)

Now, as to the .308 bore being lacking in the Contender, your not looking hard enough....There is a 309 JDJ or 309 Bellm that uses the 444 Marlin case ran through a 308 sizing die...please to use Imperial Sizing lube on this...all other lubes pale in comparison. I personally am using a 300 savage in a TC...some say its a bit too hot for it...but I roll my own and can keep it at just above pressure levels of what you can get from a 30-30 Ackley Imp cartridge...in fact, thats what I use for reloading data, but don't do this unless your confident in your reloading skills...I make no guarrantee that this will work for others...its just that it makes a spectacular cartridge for me...I keep my bullet size down to about 150 grain and its wunderbar. As far as a 30-30 in a contender, IF you reload, then my friend you have a real class act there...spitzer bullets and such will get you VERY good performance downrange, and if you run an Ackley reamer in there, then you get some REAL performance from that old boy...

THEN you have, of course, the 300 Whisper, 375 Winchester, 357 Max, 358 Bellm, 35 Remington, 375 JDJ or 375 Bellm, 44 Mag or 445 Supermag, 45 WinMag, 45 Colt, and the 45-70....there ARE, of course, other chamberings I cannot remember off the top of my head...but don't feel badly if you think your undergunned with a Contender...because your not.

PS:

Barrel cost is that high only when your buying brand new...generally, at a gunshow, you can get decent barrels for 175 or less...somtimes even with a scope...Weaver 92A scope rail is what you will need...and never let anyone try to tack on scope cost to a barrel...you don't know what that scope has been through...

Again, MTCW

The G2 is a great improvement over the original contender. If you considering a 30 cal. barrel consider the 300 Whisper but make sure you get a 1:8 twist barrel as you'll want to shot the 240 grain heads.
