I'm planning on picking up a Remington 700 VS in .308 this weekend as a belated college graduation/finding-first-real-job present to myself, but I have a few questions about the optics I'll need to mount (as the VS has no iron sights).
My current plan is to use a spare scope I have until I can afford a quality base, rings and scope (I'm leaning towards Leupold for all 3, VX-III level or above for the scope), which will require waiting 4-5 months for a promotion/bonus at my job. My main intended use for the rifle will be punching paper, but with occasional use for deer/coyote hunting.
1. I have a Bushnell Sportview 3-9x32 sitting unused in my safe (mounted on a .22lr I havent used in probably 2 years), would such a scope survive being mounted on a .308 and would it be a practical place-holder for a few months?
2. Would the scope (mentioned in #1) and rifle combination be viable for deer hunting out to 300 yards? One of my coworkers has offered to take me out on his private hunting grounds once I complete hunter safety and am confident with my rifle, but he said the normal shot on the farm is between 200 and 300 yards due to the fields being cleared.
Thanks,
Kharn
