Draft letter to Senator Gordon Smith of Oregon

The Hon. Gordon Smith
404 RUSSELL SENATE OFFICE BUILDING
WASHINGTON DC 20510

Dear Mr. Smith:

Congratulations. Due to your vote for the Assault Weapons Ban renewal amendment to S. 1805 today, I will never vote for you again. If you thought that some Clintonian “triangulation†of voting for both the AWB and the gun lawsuit immunity bill would prove you a friend of the law-abiding gun owner in Oregon, you are sorely mistaken. I do not care if the AWB amendment is stripped out in conference through some cynical ploy at appearing a “moderate.†As far as I am concerned you have shown your true colors by not understanding as simple a phrase as “the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.â€

In voting like a clueless Democrat on this core conservative issue, you have made it amply clear that there is not really any point to supporting you over any Democratic rival. If you are not a reliable vote on important Republican policy positions, I have to ask, what makes you any more a Republican on gun issues than Mr. Ron Wyden, the unabashed liberal from Portland who purports to represent ALL of Oregon too? Oregon doesn’t have an AWB for the very reason that most states think the ban is stupid public policy based on the mere appearance of a normally operating semi-automatic rifle. Evidently, pandering to the know-nothings about scary firearms is more important to you than truth or logic.

If you’d like to exclusively represent Portland as a RINO, or Republican In Name Only, I suggest you resign your seat and run against Mr. Blumenauer for the 3rd District of Oregon for the House of Representatives.

Forever not your future voter,

Eric Jensen

Change Mr. Smith to , Senator Smith.
Change - The Hon. Gordon Smith to Senator Smith.

He does not deserve the word 'Honourable'. He just dishonours the U.S. Consititution, the so called republican party and the founding fathers.

Also, I thought he voted against the ban this time?? Maybe my info/source is wrong?

I'll send him a note too.

Sounds good. I can't believe that he voted for it. I'm planning on sending a similar letter and leaving messages in DC and his Portland offices.

Nice job, Boats. You guys with Sens who supported this bill should get a letter out to your turncoats, too. :uhoh:

I not only went to his web site and put in my dissappointment but also called his Washington DC office to express my views with an ending comment that if he votes to kill the bill then I would think about supporting him on re-election.

M

p.s. The lines seems easy to get through, why didn't I get a busy signal? Am I the only one that called?

Mr. Smith,

I'll make this very short and sweet. My gun rights matters more than my gay rights, for no Employment Discrimination Bill or anything else out there that you can pass for GLBT people can ever protect me and my partner from gangs of violent homophobic thugs. Only a firearm can do that reasonably.

I am part of a coalition that simply makes this statement, if you vote to extend the assault weapons ban, you lose my vote, forever. You sir, have lost my vote, and I will make sure that your competitor, whether or not it's a primary candidate or a general election candidate, is someone who respects my right to keep and bear arms.

Regards,

Lonnie Wilson

Senator Smith voted 'Yay' on AWB renewal ammendment and 'Nay' on the Gun show loophole ammendment; at least from the other gun sites I've been scanning. No matter - he can't have it both ways. He may have figured S1805 is dead, and voted 'Yay' and AWB to cover his tracks in Oregon - he is up for re-election this year.

I expect my Senator to vote his principles, one way or another. Sad to say, but I have more respect for Senator Wyden (D) of Oregon in this respect. He even replied to my pro S659 letter of last year on this subject (S1805 now).

The time has come to fix bayonets and actively work against those who seem to work against us, regardless of their alleged party affiliation.

edited: Oops. Smith is in class II - in until 2009. It's Wyden who is class III, who is in until 2005.

OREGON THR Members Sound off for immediate action regarding Senator Smith!

I am in the process of drafting a letter/petition. What I am looking for from you is a PM detailing your true name and address so that I may put actual voters as "signators" on the bottom of my letter.

Each person who PMs me will have one of these sent in his/her name to Senator Smith (RINO) Oregon:
Sorry, it was an image of a white feather but I am revamping my website.

For right now, since I haven't actually drafted the document, I am only trying to see what response I can get. I will not attach anyone's name to the letter/petition until they have signed off on the final draft.

The letter, or box, depending on the popularity of the project, will be sent certified mail to Washington DC to Senator Smith's office there. Additionally, I will be attempting to contact the political editor of the Salem Statesman Journal and get him interested in doing a piece on our gesture of defiance to Mr. Smith's antics regarding our freedom.

What can you do? Well glad you asked. First, if you know of other Oregonians, especially from other firearm sites who might want to participate, get them the word that this is going on. Two, PM me to get my address and mail me your own white feather. Though they were only two bucks a package of four at Craft Warehouse, hundreds will be expensive. Three contact your local papers' political editor and let them know what we are up to and PM to get contact info for an interview/backgrounder. Lastly, I want people to own this effort. Put some language here you would like considered for the letter.

My plan is to have the final rough draft completed by Sunday afternoon. It will be less than a page in length, so don't get all wordy on me and expect your input to be considered. Following the completion of the rough, I will entertain further comments and suggestions while waiting the balance of March for any reporters to call and feathers and petitioners to arrive.

The whole shebang will be packed off to Senator Smith in order to arrive by April Fool's Day, in his honor of course. :D

Your feedback is not only requested it is demanded. Yes I know the White Feather is a little hackneyed, but it is light to mail and the message still resonates with cowards. If you have no idea what the symbolism is all about, hit THIS LINK!

Thanks for starting this thread. I have been trying fruitlessly since yesterday to find out how Oregon voted. I'm down here in So. Oregon, Josephine County and I am really disappointed in my leadership, but I shouldn't be surprised though.

I'm also curious as to the overall timing of the vote and debates. I think the anti-gun pro AWB people were essentially trying to back-door the renewal.

I will compose and send a letter to both Senators ASAP. Mike

I note only wrote yesterday (on their web pages) but also took the time and the money and called their offices. They really :cuss: me off!

I've PM'd you with my address (in a moment, after I send this).

I have called several times, before, during and after the vote.

Before the vote, I was told that he was going to vote for a "clean bill", and that he co-sponsered it (not sure if that is true).

During the vote, I was told the same thing.

After the AWB vote, and after being put on hold for 5 minutes, I registered my complaints with one of his aides, and she told me that she didn't know who would have told me he was going for a clean bill....heres a hint, it was her, the day before.

I asked if the had been busy, (i had been on hold a few minutes), and she said they were being slammed by angry voters.

Keep the calls coming.

I.G.B.

This is an update as to my drafting progress.

In my fit of anger over his vote pattern during the battle last week, I'd forgotten something I will share now.

I am developing what I hope will be a thoughtful letter. Though I am a lawyer, this will be one of the most difficult pieces of writing I have ever done. I do not know if everyone knows this or not, but Smith's son, Garrett, committed suicide last year just shy of his 21st birthday, and the Senator still blames himself for not spending more time with the boy. Knowing that makes my job to be stern without being insensitive a fiendishly tough one. It is made doubly difficult because I am a passing acquaintance with the man from back in his days as a state Senator when I was a legislative intern during an interim session in the mid-90s and helped him get elected to the US Senate as a volunteer.

Despite that, I need to express my disappointment in him. I should have a draft to circulate by Sunday evening.
