Orphaned 10mm (not again!)

I was at the gun store yesterday and stupidly walked by the used gun case.:banghead: I have learned through many thousands of dollars to never do this, but I broke my rule.

Sitting in the case was a pristine S&W 1006. The price was a little high at $750 but it looked so lonely. At least it has a good home now! The serial number puts it in the 1992-1993 late-model build time.

To top it off, I stumbled across a beautiful Bulgarian Makarov at a gun show today and that had to be purchased also. I've wanted one for quite some time and I'm glad I bought it - it was the only Makarov I saw at the whole show!

I think I did alright on both guns, but I was unable to shoot the 1006 since I had just shot off all my 10mm loads for the day.

Congrats! $750 is not a bad price for a clean one these days. A better 10mm handgun there is not.

Thanks guys! Mach, while I generally agree that the 1006 is one of the finest 10mm guns out there, I think the S&W 610 gives it a pretty good run for its money. I guess I'll have to get another 10mm family photo together...

I got the Makarov for $375 with a box of ammo, two mags and a crappy holster, but I'm not sure if I got a good deal or not yet. Once I figure out the weird markings I will know for sure.

These are basically 10mm version of steel-framed 45xx series which can be found in top shape for about $450, there I see no reason to pay extra $300 for this same in different caliber. I looked over second-hand 1006 and 1076 before choosing G20 instead. I suspect G20 with 15 cartridges weighs about the same as unloaded S&W pistol. To make matters even more unpalatable spare parts for S&W will soon be made of unobtainium. One way to come ahead is not to go to gun shows and gun shops. I have not been to either in weeks and that helps a whole lot.

Some of you haven't been in touch with prices lately. Watch the 1006's go on gunbroker, and $750-$800 was the price before the gun scramble of late. One in the condition above would easily bring $750, and then there are dealer fees and shipping, and sometimes tax. The days of $450-$500 S&W 1006's is long gone for most of us, although some gunshops DO put them out lower, mostly because they don't know what they could get on the internet gun auctions.

I got two mags with the gun and saw piles of S&W 10mm mags at the gun show, so I don't think it's an issue. I don't think I'll wear them out in my lifetime.

Those are out there because S&W still offers them at $41.82 per mag. There will come time when parts will be made of unobtainium. I looked at couple of them and chose G20 instead since it is better combat weapon. The prices for little used & boxed S&W 10mm pistols have been in $750+/-50 for number of years now. The .45 version even in rare variety like 4505 is still $450 pistol.

Well Pablo I strongly disagree that the G20 is better at ANYTHING except its future use as a tupperware product, but you think what you like. The 1006 is a pistol done right that some of us out there know how to appreciate and I have no doubts about its ability as a "combat weapon".

Great to hear. be certain to get some out of those "piles" before they disappear. Sure as baby rabbits, when you need mags the surplus will be gone.

Yeah, if you can travel to 2003. Good luck with that. $700-$900 is normal for a 98%+ 1006 these days.

The 1006 really isn't that heavy, and capacity shortcomings are subjective.

I have a G20 and a 1006, really no question which one I'd take if the gun had to work after thousands of full power loads and enduring untold abuse. The 1006 is just a tougher gun, period.

To the OP, nice gun, they're tanks. FWIW, I'll take any Smith 10mm over a Glock any day, yes, I have both.

I took the 1006 out to the range with some reloads I built for it. Four loads were built using 12.1, 12.5, 13.0 and 13.5 grains of AA #9. Recoil was substantially more than other 10mm pistols I have fired, but I think I will adjust to it in time. The results are below, with pictures posted in ascending order of powder charge. Targets were shot at approximately 10 yards.
Do NOT use these loads in your gun without working up to them safely!

I could not disagree more. I have a G20 and a G20SF. I also have a 1006, 1086 and a 1076. Wait until you've had a case head failure and tell me a steel framed gun has no advantages! You don't have to pay S&W for a new frame when a case lets go like I did with my 20SF.

If you actually like to shoot affordable ammo (meaning reloads) that even remotely approaches full power then there isn't even a contest: the S&W platform wins because the factory Glock barrel renders your brass unsafe to reload after one full power firing.
