OT: Where to find service info for WWII?

Mods, I'd appreciate it if you could leave this open, even for a little while.

I'm trying to find out details of when & where my grandfather served during World War II. All I know is he spent some time here in the US down south and then went to Europe. Are there websites that detail this kind of info if I provide a name, SSN, serial, etc? What about the Army itself, do they help with this?

Thanks for the link Milo. Have you gone through the process? If so, is it relatively simple?
 
If they won't release the info to you as a relative, you can also file a FIOA request as a "journalist."
 
Email me the info and I'll find him. I've done it for several people here in the past.

I do non-military stuff, too, so if any of you are curious about family history stuff, let me know..I'm willing to do some quick lookups to see what I can find for you.
