Otis has a new product, called Ripcord, that looks sort of like a smaller, lighter Bore Snake. I bought two, for my 9mm and 45cal pistols. They look fine, but I was dissatisfied with the lack of instructions.

I called Otis and asked what is the intended use, how do they relate to other forms of cleaning, and do you use solvent with them.

Otis said that these are intended just to give your barrel a quick wipe in the middle of a long rang session. You should not use solvent with them and they do not replace regular cleaning back home.

Just thought I'd share in case anyone else was interested in this product.

I make something that looks like a bore snake, when finished I can throw it away or clean in a washing machine. It is for my personal use. I had someone call wanting help removing a bore snake, I saw a bore snake demonstrated, impressive on a shotgun. anyhow, I decided to make a bore cleaner that was impossible to lock up, jam or come apart in the barrel.

What I have seen folks do with bore snakes - especially for small bore rifles like an AR - is tie a length of paracord to the back loop. That way WHEN the pull string breaks with the whole snake in the barrel, you can pull it back out.

BTW, I wouldn't throw a greasy/oily boresnake in momma's washing machine; a small bucket with hot water and Dawn liquid dish soap, followed by a cold rinse and sun dry will do a great job with no residue in the washer.
