A got a call from a buddy on Saturday seeing if I wanted to go to the range with him to break in his new shotgun. I haven't been to the range in a while so I said "Sure"! I brought my new HD shotgun and we both ran about 25-30 rounds through our shotguns. It was a mix of 00 Buck, Rifled slugs and a few Walmart shells I use for shooting clay pigeons. I was feeling pretty good and my shoulder was just a little sore at most.

My friend then pulls his old 270 bolt action hunting rifle out. I'm not sure of the make but the stock was a very glossy honey color and it ran right up to the muzzle. It was very light and has an old 2x-8x scope mounted. My friend said he hadn't shot it in over 10 years and he just wanted to make sure the zero was still good. He shot it 4 times and was inside the 9 ring or better at 100 yards. He was happy. He then turned it over to me to try. I loaded up two rounds and took aim. The first round when off fine with only a little twing in the shoulder. But that all changed after the second shot. I pull the trigger on my second shot and I experience this shooting pain through my shoulder from the recoil. Not normal pain, but very intense shooting pain. I figure I just overdid it and figured it would go away.

Well today is Monday and the pain is still there. Now with the pain comes some big time swelling right where the butt of a rifle would be. It's also black and blue. I can move my arm alright except when reaching back like if I was to tuck in the back of a shirt or try to get my wallet out of my back pocket. No go there. The pain becomes pretty intense then and my arm doesn't want to move that way because of the swelling.

The only thing I can think of is a few weeks back I shot a few 3 inch magnum rifled slugs out of my HD shotgun and it hurt a bunch and I had some black and blues then. There wasn't any swelling and the pain went away pretty quick. I just figured to never shoot those again.

So what do you think? Just a sprain, or did I do something serious? Anyone else ever have this happen to them? I really don't want to take time off to go to the doctors for something stupid. But if it doesn't go away soon, I guess I'd better.

Suck it up sissy boy!

Just kidding :D

Seriously you really should see a doctor. My friend tore his pectoral muscle doing something similar. That was quite painful.

edited cus I cant spel

You may have dislocated your shoulder...

Or herniated a muscle in your shoulder....

The swelling and bruising is not normal...

I once got a bad B&B from and old Ithaca 2bbl. single trigger...
Yep, both barrels at the same time and I had Ithaca imprinted on my shoulder along with a perfect bruise shaped like the buttstock.
It hurt like hell for a day and the bruise went away within 3 days...

Go to the DR. but don't tell him you did it with a gun or you'll be part of a new study on how firearms create medical "dilemnas" (sp?)

I have a shoulder injury (probably caused by weight lifting) at the moment. I asked about my specific issue on a weightlifting forum and was linked to this. Maybe it will give you some ideas, but I also advocate seeing a doctor. I will be soon if the pain don't go away.

Probably not rotator cuff as that's caused by overextension (got one in a motorcycle wreck once). And probably not a cracked collar bone...which isn't good news, as those heal surprisingly well (more or less every motorcycle racer has funky collarbones from prior crash damage, it's just about THE most common motorcycle injury).

SEE A DOCTOR.

If something is "displaced", it'll get WORSE with time, not better.

Some things DO NOT "heal on their own"!!!

Better go see the doctor, that don't sound right. I fired a 458 win mag from the bench, when i got home my shoulder was black and blue and sore. But not like what your describing.

Ok, I think we are overlooking the obvious here.

If you grab a gun and head to the range to do some "shooting".

Don't you expect to have "shooting" pain when its time to leave?

C'mon folks, lets think about this....

Just kidding of course. I have been there.....458 win mag and a 416 rigby have both whipped me!

Actually there was no blood, but I woke up this morning and the swelling seems to be the same. The only difference now is that the skin over the swelling is a bruised yellow color and for whatever reason I have some seriously ugly deep red and vivid purple bruising from my arm pit down my inside arm to the middle of the muscle in my upper arm. (Don't know the technical term for the muscle. lol) Very sensitive to the touch.

Oh well, guess I'll need to call the doctor this morning. I agree that I'm not going to tell him it's a shooting injury. Hummmm, maybe I ran into a tree or something. Um, my choices is for him to consider me a gun nut or an idiot who ran into a tree. :uhoh: Come to think it, I'd rather it be the gun nut!!!

It could be serious, quit waiting and get to a doctor. It kind of sounds like what I read in one of John Taffin's colloums about shooting shotguns. He ended up with a very serious blood clot in his shoulder. Don't take any chances. Jim.

Sounds like you started off with a simple bruise. But coagulated blood in the bruise has broken off, a clot, and has done more damage. In a muscle like the bicep, there is likely to be no permanent damage but it is wild painful. It can result in muscle damage if the clot blocks blood flow to the muscle tissue.

The real problem is that blood clots floating around can end up in other organs; most importantly, the brain. Then you are in a world of trouble.

Go see a doctor, right about now. There is no reason to not explain the nature of the injury. You are a gun owner and shooter. Be proud of that!

"I would tell the doc exactly what happened."

I would too. You need the best diagnosis possible and you won't get it if the docs think something else caused it.

If you're still reading this, then turn the damn computer off and get going. Read what shermacman just said, clots can be very serious business.

Tell the doc the truth as to the cause of the injury. It is only with the truth that you will get a proper diagnosis. If the doc gives you a bad time about shooting and guns, suck it up and do what you need to to get better.

RE;

I'm with Tuner....this sounds like rotator cuff issue, torn ligament or severe muscle damage.....No home remedies this time get it checked out before it requires major surgery....It won't get better on it's own.....good luck....mack

Go to the doctor. Let your wife know that you will tell him that she got really infuriated at you demanding to watch the closing ceremony of the Olympics. Tell him she got physicaL AGAIN and that you cant stand being beaten any longer... cry a bit and ask if he can call the police for you. Then tell her what you want in exchange for telling the doc the REAL truth.. that way she can avoid getting a cell with a fat butch lady with a 'personal' agenda.

Just kidding of course. I want to chime in and say that you NEED to tell the doc exactly how you got said injury. If he gives you ANY crap about your hobby let him know why you just fired him and find a doctor that isnt prone to blaming the inannimate objects in his patients lives for all woes real or imagined.

Do see a doctor and DO tell him exactly what happened. Explain to him the level of 'kick' that each weapon grants its user.. there may be something from the repeated whallops that makes a difference. Who can guess.

Take care,
Charles

:( Erg!! Get yourself to a doc, fast! I got similar bruising February, turned out to be a ruptured bicep tendon!! Re-attachment surgery, PT, and no shooting long guns or lifting ammo laden range bags for months has been awful! I sincerely hope it's not as serious for you - please keep us posted.

Well I just got home from the doctors office and it's not good news. It would seem that I have a torn upper bicep muscle and a chip on the bone that it attaches to. Doctor said there isn't much I can do at this point except rest my arm. It's now in a sling with strict orders to not shoot "ANY" firearms (yep, you hear right. Any firearms! :banghead: ) He said that if it was the lower bicep muscle, like DCR had, I would need surgery. But this can only be fixed by letting it heal naturally. No shooting, no golf, no gym, no moutain bikiing, no nothing for 6-8 weeks. HOLY CRAP!! I'm going to go insane!!!!!

For a number of years now I've had this strange blood disorder which makes my blood clot very easily. To counter I take cumadin (blood thinner) every day. The doctor said that this has helped and hurt me in this situation. Hurt in that the swelling and pain will be worse because it will bleed more internally, but helping in that I don't have to worry about blood clots forming and causing serious problems. Silver lining I guess.

Thanks for advise everyone. Guess going to the doctor was a good thing. Oh and by the way, the doctor was very cool about the reason I'm in this state. He only stated that maybe I need to reduce the round count when I get to go back again.

Be straight with the doc. Tell him about the intial insult,(injury), and what recently happened.

I am recovering from surgery right now. When I went to the doc, I told exactly what happened the first time and how I reinjuried it before it healed all the way.

The doc took one look at me, had me do a couple simple moves and told me what was wrong down to the last detail. then had an MRI down to confirm.
He was right on the money. I asked how did he know all that from a quick exam? Doc said:
(1) I was truthful and didn't try to cover up anything by acting macho
(2): I got to him pretty quick after the second injury
(3): He has seen dozens of these before.

Hope you heal quick my new friend, and I really hope it isn't super serious.
Let us know how you make out.
