A friend of mine is looking for a pistol, he has looked at and held a bunch of pistols but wants something "different" or more "unique" looking. Basically not a cookie cutter looking pistol. This will be a range gun and he wants something in 9mm.

I know you'll say have him shoot some models then decide but I am afraid the unusual guns he may be interested in will not be available for rent.

So basically tell me some odd ball 9mm pistols, preferably under $1000.

In 9mm you say? Hrm. Has he looked into a repro Luger? Maybe a Walther P38?
Also, there is some 9mm revolvers, but they do look like generic revolvers.
The Steyr pistols are kind of odd, too, not sure how funky he wanted his pistol, though.
a Para Carry 9 is also slightly off.

Ironically I totally get the guy. I love the oddballs of the gun world.

Actually ... what he might want to do (similar to my carry gun) is something he inherently kinda likes the lines on and then heavily customize it. Go for a look, if you will.
I got a Kahr E9 that was used to the point of the finish being gone where the fingers rest and then started customizing it. You'd be surprised at what you can do to a gun that doesn't change the internals but goes a long way in making it stand out.
Currently I'm at the stage where I have to decide what I want to do with mine, I am flipflopping between making it an evil flat black looking monster or a brass barreled and high tech engraved steampunk gun. The internals work just fine, so they don't get touched much, of course.

Yeah I mean we're walking through the gun show and the seas and seas of pistols all start to blend together, so I do get where he is coming from. I know the 9mm is limiting but he wants something that isn't expensive to shoot.

He has mentioned the Luger before. Hmmm.
 
We have a P38 sitting at our LGS here in Corvallis, OR. The name is Corvallis Guns or ABG Buyers ... they're kinda changing right now.
I *think* they sell online, too. Might wanna use the Google-Fu. 8)
 
Berreta PX4 seems like a nice gun, although I think this gun is gaining popularity...
 
I will pass along some of these suggestions, another friend of mine owns a PX4 Subcompact, so he was able to try that out and wasn't a fan of the trigger.

Well, they aren't too odd looking, but CZ 75's look great and are a little unusual, they and their clones are basically the only game in town for pistols with a slide that runs inside the frame. Though Sig is coming out with a $2000+ remake of their P210.
 
BDM! Really cool, discontinued Browning Dual Mode 9mm pistol. 15 + 1 capacity with original 15-rnd Browning magazines.
