Just got a XDs 45 great gun. My question is can I over shoot it. Right now I am shooting 500 800 rds per week. What can some of the damage to my gun can I cause at that rate?

You barrel and action have limited life spans, but they're in the tens of thousands of rounds. Proper maintenance helps assure those life spans are maximized.

Fire away.

Subcompacts are known to be rough on recoil springs. Check Wolff Gunspring, Buy a few and replace often. This will prevent peening of the frame or barrel. Opinion on what qualifies as "often" varies, but a good rule of thumb is about 3-5k. Contact Springfield and ask what the service interval of your gun's recoil spring is.

SO Now we know where all the .45 ammo is going nobody else can find on the shelves anywhere!!

You must really make the rounds to get all of it!

Guns are made to shoot, too many people just set and watch there guns get old...... Your doing it right. Don't over think it. If at some point somthing does break let springfield show you why they are know for customer service and then get back to rockin it out.

Wow! I managed to buy one box of .45 ACP this week, and am planning on spending a day with a calculator in order to figure out how many shooting sessions I can stretch that into.

I would be more concerned with wearing myself out shooting that much .45 from a gun that size. I have no firsthand experience with small .45s, though. The ones I've bought have been full-size pistols.

If you've never broken a gun, you just ain't been shooting enough!

At 500-800 rounds a week you'll join the club probably within the year. Fix what breaks and keep shooting! That is why Clint Smith says "two are one, one is none!"

Guns are made to shoot. You will not feel bad "over-shooting" the gun. There's no substitute for trigger time if you can afford it. Just plan on replacing the recoil springs, and eventually the striker spring, and even longer out, the barrel.

Wearing a gun out is a privilege. I wish I had the time, energy, and resources to wear out a few more of mine.

When it wears out, you get another. The replacement cost is modest, compared to the cost of many thousands of rounds of ammunition. The skills and the muscle memory are yours to keep.

It's an excellent bargain. Go for it.

I agree with the people who say keep shooting!

Depending on the design of the gun, some parts may wear out after a while, but the cost of the repairs will be a fraction of the cost of ammunition!

Springfield offers a lifetime warranty IIRC. If you manage to wear it out let them give you another one or piece it back together. By the time it is worn out the cost of another pistol will seem very small anyway compared to how much you have spent on ammunition.

I have a XDs with about 700 rds, in 6 months, so if it were mine, I would check every part befor I would carry it.
As far as I know, the recoil assembly is only available from SA. You should order one now, cause I bet you will need one soon, they wear fast in that little gun. I think you can see the parts that are most prone to wear/break, and when you take it down, as I am sure, you know about the thing with the striker.
I resist, so far, to use mine as a range beater, but thinking of a second for just that, it is, nothing but fun to shoot.

I agree with the others who say shoot the gun as much as you want. Replace the recoil spring as needed. If something breaks, let Springfield fix it or take it to a good gunsmith.

You can double the service life of your gun by...buying a second one.

500 a week is 26,000 a year.
That might well find the service life of a compact.

In two years 52,000 rounds. You'll likely need a new barrel before then. Of course a handful of recoil springs. A few other things as well maybe.

500 rounds a week at 19.99 for a box of 50. 20 boxes is $200. a week.

If you reload it can still be an impressive piece of money over the year.

Course the fella may have more than one gun that he shoots 500-800 rounds out of per week.

Interesting that a fella who shoots that much a week feels he has to ask if he can overshoot his gun.

I agree with the others who say shoot the gun as much as you want.

There was no one who disagreed that he should shoot the gun.

I've put over 300,000 rounds through my Glocks. Tens of thousands through the individual Glocks. Never a problem. You won't wear out a Glock barrel....ever.

What is the maintenance schedule for the XD? You should buy enough parts to get through the year. Don't forget to buy magazine parts too.
