A South Tucson family is mourning the loss of their two pit bulls after they were shot by an officer. But it's not the officer who's in trouble.

Prosecutors are considering filing criminal charges against the dogs' owners. "I locked that gate," says the owner, who didn't want to be identified. "I don't know how they got out."

When one bit a man, Sgt. Armando Teyechea was called to the scene.

"There was actually a witness who yelled at Sgt. Teyechea, look out," says Sgt. Dan Snyder of South Tucson Police. "As he turned around, he saw the dog was on a dead run for him. At that point he drew his weapon and fired."

The male named "Pirate" was killed.

"You have to make a split second decision. At that point, the officer felt he was in danger for his life."

The officer says, when "Lady" the female pit bull charged at him, he shot her, too.

"I don't understand -- his gun went off six times, why would he shoot 6 times?" says the owner. The owner says using a gun on an animal is excessive force. But South Tucson Police says the officer did not violate police policy. Police say six shots is what it took to stop both dogs. The sergeant says even after he shot the first pit bull twice, it still kept running. The third shot finally killed him. It's still unclear how many bullets hit the second dog.

"When you have a pit bull snapping his jaws, growling, it's an aggressive animal for whatever reason." says Sgt. Snyder.

But their owner finds that hard to believe: "They looked mean, but they were sissies. You stomped your feet and they would run from you."

Records show Animal Control was called out to the owners' home four times since 2001 for various complaints including dogs on the loose. The man bit by one of the pit bulls bit was not seriously hurt. It's now up to the county attorney to decide whether the owners will be charged with endangerment and harboring vicious animals.

Hmm....I think I know why... (Duh!) :banghead:

That I am afraid (cynic mode ON) . is what so many owners will say - even when their dog/dogs have bitten a stranger .. even a kid.

I am afraid to say .... many examples of this breed can and do ''flip'' .. from being the supposed ''sissy'' to .. an attack animal ... with very powerful jaws and body. I will not hesitate to shoot ... if such an animal makes an attack move toward me or my family.

Good shoot. And I am sure the officer is sorry he had to shoot your dog six times, but judgement is only on the first shot. If he was justified to shoot at a dog, he was justified to continue until it was dead.
Congratulations on not being injured officer. Has anyone considered how difficult it would be to hit a charging dog? A close downward angled shot, at a fast moving target?

its too bad they don't put the owner down along with the dogs , maybe some of this bs would stop...

Excessive force my arse!

I recently worked with animals in a medical capacity in NYC before I moved to FL.
Most of the cases I worked on dealt with Dogs.
I've been called to "pitbull puppy mills", and some places you would'nt want to even set foot in.
About five months ago, my co-worker and I were called to the C.A.C.C. (Center for Animal Care and Control) in Brooklyn as requested by the N.Y.P.D. .
The case dealt with an emergency medical transport of a pitbull with a gunshot wound to the head. the dog was to be taken to the A.M.C.(Animal Medical Center) in Manhattan.
N.Y.P.D. wanted the still live animal to undergo surgery to retrieve the bullet from the dog's head. Said bullet was to be given over to the ballistics lab.
We were expecting the worse. Gunshot to the head... this was going to be a messy one we thought. Boy, were we wrong!
The Pitbull comes sauntering out of the exam room on a leash, tail wagging!
According to X-rays, you could see the bullet in the dog's head! It just broke the surface of the skull and was lodged there. As a result, the dog's head was severely swollen. I asked the detective what were the circumstances of the shooting, and especially, what caliber was the dog shot with?
Only things he could tell me, was that the dog belonged to a suspected drug dealer(who had priors) and they wanted to determine what gun the bullet came from.
It was believed that the suspect's friends had picked up shell casings before the cops arrived on-scene.
As for caliber, because of the types and calibers of guns found on the scene, it was either a .380 or a 9mm!
Because of that incident, I believe the Officer was totally just in shooting those dogs.
You can never tell what will happen when events like these transpire.

If the "top dog" (the owner) or the #2 dog (his wife) stomps a foot as a disciplinary warning, the dogs WOULD cower and whimper. Thing is strangers to a dog are never recognized as anybody to obey. Even yapping little terriers will just keep yapping and growling when a stranger stomps a foot.

Stupid owners. Good shoot.

Three shots, three hits, in action fire on a fast moving target. I want this guy on my side in any gunfight! It didn't say if the second dog was also hit three times, bu at least once. Good enough in my book.

NOTHING that takes 3 hits from a cops gun (cops don't carry 25s) to stop is a "sissy". It's good the cop was not hurt. Good shoot & good shooting.

Anybody too dumb to figure that out is too dumb to open a can of dog food.
Excuse me SW - whilst I ............

Love it!!

Good Shoot....

-- his gun went off six times, why would he shoot 6 times?

That's why I carry a .45 most of the time. :D

Anyone know what caliber their duty weapons are?

Good Shooting

Take the owner and toss his butt over the fence of someone else's yard who owns some nice sweet pitt bulls.
