Owning two of the same gun

OK, I've had a CZ P09 for years which has been great. I carry it, I train with it, its what I'm the most used to. I'm buying a second one for primary carry, and retiring the old one for training only. Going to equip and update the new one exactly as the first with a stainless guide rod and 18# spring, and upgraded trigger return spring, and night fision sights. Am I nuts, or should I have just bought a new P10F?

Everyone is different. I have three Beretta PX4s one is a 9mm, the other two are .40 two are black one is Inox (SS). So yes, I have more than one of the same basic handgun. However, I do not switch between the PX4s, but between a PX4 and an H&K. If you train and learn you can switch mentally between the two with no problems. However, like already noted by some; a lot of people; LE included will have a backup as close to identical as the standard handgun they carry.

Same firearms? Why would anyone do that?

Eta: one of my lottery buys will be multiples of same make and model same caliber guns. Just gotta start buying that ticket

The p09 and p10f are very different guns with different types of actions. I guess if you’re looking to train with one, but carry the other, I’d stick to the same platform. P09/P07, or P10c/P10f or two of the exact same.

Yeah, getting another P09. Might get the P10F later. At least the mags interchange with to P09. Just need to add a SS guide rod to the new P09, along with an upgraded trigger spring and new NightFision sights, like my current one.

You bought a CZ P-09 then you bought another CZ P-09. Anytime you buy a CZ, even a duplicate, that’s always a good thing!:)

I agree that in theory it’s a great idea to have multiples. A spare, a “beater” for the range, and one to carry, and shoot occasionally but keep “fresh” so that it’s in its mechanical prime for when it counts.

In practice however, that’s a lot of money to tie up, and one gun is likely to be just fine, and to outlast its owner. So I’d say that it’s important not to overthink these things too much.

I have a couple different pistols that can be used if my main carry gun bit the dust, but none of them are identical. My identical guns are ones where spare parts are hard to get, or the time to buy them is mostly over. ie. I have a couple Swedish Mausers, Vz.58's, etc.

Owning two of the same gun is quite possibly nuts:
  • Left: SIG P229 Stainless Elite
  • Center: Beretta 92FS
    • Top: Made in Italy
    • Bottom: Made in Accokeek, MD
  • Right: SIG P220 Stainless Match Elite with consecutive serial numbers.

And these are just the handguns for which I have duplicates.

You are not nuts ... but it's not what I do. I have several in the carry rotation, including a couple of revolvers. Yes, different manual of arms, but I am comfortable with all of them. Closest to "duplicates" would be the two Glocks, but one is a 23 and the other a 48, so not really ... or the three GP100s, but one is a 3-inch 44 special, one is a 3-inch 357, and one is a 4-inch 357, so again, not really duplicates.

I own a classic P229 and P220 as well, and they were the first two guns I ever bought. You just won this thread.

I own two pairs of identical pistols,,,
But they are for range use and not self defense.

My Modern Dueling Pistols,,,
Ruger Mk-III 22/45's.

I named them Veritas and Equitas,,,
Latin for Truth and Justice.

I have two 4.5" Beretta U22 NEOS pistols as well,,,
I just haven't put them in a case as yet.

It's nice for when you take a friend to the range,,,
You're both shooting the same type pistol,,,
So no advantage for either person.

Id say a good portion of this bunch has duplicate long guns too. Especially AR rifles. I have a few myself. I also have duplicates of things I collect. There are several old lever action rifles I have two of. Some older shotguns too.

After reading this thread I'd tend to agree. This thread lit me up because I literally don't know anyone else in my moderately sized group of shooting and hunting friends that does this.

EDIT: see bold above.
I've done this with my wife! And my best friend! And my best friend's wife!
One of us would say hey let's take out the Beretta's today...

I can't say that any of my buddies do either with handguns. Not even the LEO guys I shoot with.

I do know collectors who have multiple of old guns. Sometimes with small differences. Like M1 carbines or some particular model. I have a friend who has a bunch of savage 99s. He also has a pile of the old remington 5mm rifles from back when no ammo was made and they were cheap. His brother has a bunch of Ithaca 37 shotguns.

I do know one guy that collected Garands - he literally had about 50 of them. He became ill and tried to sell them all in his last months. I have a Garand...but I just didn't want another as I have a hard enough time shooting the one I have with my eyes no longer able to focus well on the front sight.
