I have something I'm considering doing to a P64 I have to assist in field stripping re-assembly.

The P64 is a PPK clone and has the same basic takedown and reassembly process. Of course being a Polish Milsurp pistol it's a little rough fitting.

The impetus behind this thread are those "fins" or "stips" at the rear of the slide (inside the slide) which fit into the channel on the frame to hold the slide on.

Well they're supposed to. The problem is that this isn't exactly the epitome of craftsmanship, and the slide doesn't fit the frame very well.

I'm considering taking a Dremel tool and gently filing the edges of the small protrusions inside the slide I mentioned so that they'll be just a tiny hair shorter. I think this would make it much easier to reassemble.

Right now it's about a 30 minute job to get it back together as I jerk and struggle to make the slide fall just exactly into place onto the frame.

Is this a good idea or not? I'm reassembling like like I'd reassemble a PPK:

Replace recoil spring
Pull trigger guard down
Put slide in position
Pull slide back, pushing down on rear of slide

And eventually I'll finally get it in that perfect position where it will actually catch. The trouble is the protrusions on the inside of the slide are slightly longer than the channel they have to occupy, if that makes any sense. We're talking about maybe 1/16" of an inch here.

Is there some technique I should try before considering even this minor modification? I'm not changing any mechanical part of the gun, just shaving a little metal off the inside of the slide so it will go back together more readily.

Just note the Poles dumped the guns new and unissued onto the commercial market.
That should have been your first warning bell right there.

You can stone and lap the slide and frame rails to allow easier replacement.
You will be pretty much on your own here because I know of no 'smiths who will work these guns without charging the owner more than the gun is worth to conduct the repairs, myself included.
