I really don't remember if it's always been this way since it has been a couple of months since I shot it. However now when I hold it empty the slide rattles back and forth with vibration(left and right if you where to hold it in a firing position.) When I put a clip in and chamber a round the rattling decreases but it's still there. Any thoughts as if this is normal or not.

I have probably around 1500-2000 rounds through my P99 9mm now and it has just a hint rattle in the slide to frame fit when unloaded. Hasn't been detrimental to accuracy or function so far.

7-800 in mine and no rattle at all 
Basically a gun is a machine and when you shoot it dry it wears out very quickly just as an automobile would blow up with no oil in the crankcase.
This is a concept that is totally alien to the average shooter that I run into at our range on a daily basis. Mention oil or grease and you get a blank stare. Most simply cannot believe that their weapons will ever need maintenance of any kind. No cleaning ever needed and absolutely never needing even a drop of oil.
I have a Walther P99 in 9mm and it is as tight as the day I bought it despite having put over 1,000 rounds through it. It was always heavily greased in the slide rails and barrel muzzle seat in the slide along with being oiled with break free in the rest of the weapon. The weapon was cleaned squeeky clean after every firing and then relubed for the next time.

I have a couple of Walthers and they both rattle a little, the 9mm rattling less than the .40. They did loosen up slightly from when they were brand new. They loosened up after the very first 200 rounds through each, but they haven't gotten any looser. Break-in, you know. Yes, I'm a lube freak, so they were not fired dry.
All guns loosen up with firing. Even those tightly fitted custom 1911s. You can even take an out of the box Les Baer (generally recognized as one of the tightest guns out there), put a few hundred rounds through it, and it will be noticeably (albeit slight) less tight than it was before you shot it. Don't believe people that say they have a (insert brand) pistol that has 10,000+ rounds through it and is as tight as the day they bought it.

My P99 9mm has loosened up some since new but not in anyway to the point of rattling and still much tighter than your average glock. Loose to me means I can feel the slide shift ever so slightly left or right when I try. This ia despite having kept it well lubed...

All recoil operated guns loosen up with firing. Fixed barrel guns don't, really.

Oh yeah, I forgot, fixed-barreled handguns are vastly superior to recoil-operated pistols.
